"How do you know all about that stuff?" Lydia asked Marcus quietly.
"How do I know you kissed Stefan? I guessed." he smiled a toothy smile at Lydia.
Marcus didn't look more than 13 years old. He looked very fragile to Lydia. His chocolate brown skin was impossible to see in the dark. And even if it was bright outside, Marcus was still unreadable.
"Well, you're a good guesser." Lydia giggled.
Marcus grinned. "No, just observant."
"Really now?" Lydia asked.
Marcus grimaced. "Nobody ever notices me. But I notice them..." he trailed off.
"How old are you?" Lydia asked abruptly.
"I7. You?" Marcus asked.
"16." Lydia said. "So, how long have you bee-"
Tahie interrupted her mid-sentence. "Switch!"
By now, the group knew the routine. Lydia headed up to walk beside Gavin.
"Hey." Gavin said in a small voice. "Hey." Lydia answered uneasily, taking hold of his hand.
The two were silent for a while. The light at the end of the darkness was slowly getting closer. The light was no longer bright and angelic. Instead, it looked like a red light looming over them.
"Switch!" Tashie yelled again.
Lydia was in the front with Stefan.
The light was finally close enough for Lydia to see the others.
Lydia had never really took a nice look at Stefan.
Stefan was handsome. Very, very handsome. At around 6'1", Stefan had short black hair spiked up in the front. His skin was perfect, his teeth white, his bright blue eyes looked they were staring into your soul. He was charming. Hot.
And he had kissed Lydia.
"So," Stefan said, taking he hand, "I can finally see your beautiful face again."
Lydia blushed and giggled. "Are we almost there?" she asked, trying to ignore his remark.
"I hope not." Stefan said, laughing along with Lydia.
Gavin stared at the couple in front of him. No, not a couple. Just a couple of people. He kept trying to tell himself that. But by the way they were holding hands, you just couldn't be sure.
"Form a circle!" Tashie yelled. Everyone did as told, surrounding Tashie.
"We're almost there, guys. I can feel it." Tahie said excitedly. "We're all going to walk in one line. No more partners. We need to be prepared, just in case. We should be meeting more runaways here."
Gavin sighed. So much for talking to Lydia. He walked along with the others in line.
"Gavin, hurry up!" Natalie yelled.
But Gavin was having trouble walking.
