Lydia couldn't remember the last time she was with her family. It felt like it had been decades ago, but it had only been a few days. She didn't know why she was here. Every 8 years, the human race is tested and analyzed to be sure that no virus is invading their bodies. The last test had been in 2256 when Lydia was a mere 12 years old. The year now was 2260. It had only been four years, so why was she here?
"Test number two will begin shortly. Remember, this will be a multiplayer heat 2 test. Otherwise known as a partner test." the voice boomed. "You will receive your bubble at the start of the test. It will appear in the left corner of your room. When we tell you to, you will get into the bubble and be transported to your destination. If you fail to go do this, you will suffer the consequences."
Lydia shivered and looked around the room. Bubble? What bubble? She thought. Lydia was very confused. I'm not going anywhere, she thought.
The voice came back on. "The test will begin in 10..9.."
Lydia saw the bubble appear in the corner. She timidly walk up to the object. It was clear, but had a pinkish tint to it. Lydia stuck her hand in and cringed as she felt the sticky plasma wrap itself around her hand, taking it in.
"8..7.."
Lydia pulled her hand out of the bubble, disgusted. I'm not leaving, she thought.
As if the walls in the room could read her mind, spikes began to poke out of the walls. The walls began to move forward, closing in on Lydia.
"6..5.."
Lydia gasped. She had no idea what was going on, but she knew spikes were dangerous and lethal.
"4..3.."
Lydia looked around the room one last time for an escape.
"2.."
Lydia walked toward the bubble, closed her eyes, and pushed her way in.
"1.."
Lydia was now fully in the bubble, unsure of what would happen.
"6 of you have chosen not to comply. That is fine. We can do well without you."
Even though she was in the bubble, Lydia could still hear the blood-curling screams that came a few seconds later. The six children had died. They didn't sound very far away. Even though the other children were shrieking in pain and agony, it gave Lydia a sense of comfort. Because Lydia wasn't alone.
"RUN!" a voice screamed at her.
Lydia looked up and realized she was no longer in the bubble.
She was in a forest.
And it was on fire.
