"What's your name?" Lydia huffed as she and the boy, still in the forest, walked. The boy stared straight ahead. "Gavin." he stated. "I'm Lydia." Lydia smiled at Gavin. "Good to know." Gavin said, running his fingers around the trees and along the ground. "Why are you doing that?" Lydia asked.
Gavin stopped walking and stare at Lydia. "You don't understand, do you?" he asked. "Umm..not really." Lydia said sheepishly. "Care to explain?"
"I'm always looking for an exit." Gavin sighed, rubbing his forehead. "If we find a way out of this building, we can leave. We can stop being tortured. We can prosecute the ones who are doing this to us." Gavin said excitedly. "Lydia, this may possibly be the only time you ever meet me. The things they make us do, they vary depending on our fears. And in a few seconds, minutes, or maybe even hours, we'll be transported back to those plain brown rooms where we were before the forest fire. And we'll be all alone. Until they put us into another living nightmare. And there will be no way out." Gavin's eyes looked cold. "I've been trapped in here for nearly two years, Lydia. I've seen things you can't even imagine. I've been tortured to the breaking point. I saw my sister die, right in front of me. I've seen my best friends been murdered. And all I can do is watch. They brought my whole family here, and I'm the only one left. I was foolish at first, sleeping every night and having nightmares. I learned from that when I dreamt about a tornado killing my father and actually living it the next day."
Gavin looked Lydia hard in the eyes and grabbed her by the shoulders. "Don't ever fall asleep, Lydia. Don't dream good things, don't dream bad things. It'll tear you apart."
Lydia stared at Gavin, awestruck. "But..I don't understand. Why are they doing this to us?"
"I don't know, Lydia." Gavin said dryly. "And I don't plan on finding out."
Gavin and Lydia started to continue walking. Suddenly, a high pitched noise was heard.
Lydia covered her ears. "What's happening?" she yelled to Gavin. But he was fading away. The nature around Lydia dissolved, and the dirt under her caved in. Lydia blinked her eyes and saw that she was back in her plain brown room, not a flame or tree in sight. Or a person.
Gavin was gone.
