Chapter 3
I automatically close up into a ball, my grey skin and mossy hair making me look like a small stone. I open one eye. The light is so bright. I must be artificial, it's too white to be the sun, and it doesn't cast warm rays over everything, just radiates bleakness and hatred. Everything humans stand for. Footsteps are coming, nearer and neared, padding across the hard floor. I can sense someone next to my cage, a girl, quite young. She reeks of youth and strawberries. "The fairy's gone?" she says to herself. Egh. I hate it when they call us fairies. We're nothing like those air-headed prancing ballerinas, with pink sparkly dresses and delicate butterfly like wings. We're faeries. Different thing all together. I open my eyes, and see the girl. She realises straight away that I am just curled up. Darn it. She is around eight, with long blonde hair tied back with a pink ribbon. She is wearing a small blue skirt and a white top with big pink and purple flowers on. Just the kind of person I DON'T need.
"Hello, I'm Eve" she says.
And I'm leaving. I get up, spread my wings, and fly up and out. Except there is no out. Just a hard ceiling identical to the floor. Well yeah, well done Melantha, faerie, wings, flight, they're really going to leave the top open. I fly back down and sit sulkily in the corner. Eve just gapes. A woman dressed in a smart suit and black stilettos strides in, briefcase swinging from her immaculately manicured fingernails. I close up again, and shuffle into the darkest corner of the box. "Have you seen the pretty fairy honey?" she drawls. "Yes it's here-" she starts, stopping abruptly and peering into my prison. "Well come on sweetheart its time for school. " "ok then." Eve replies sadly. "Bye-bye fairy!"
As they leave, I breath a sigh of relief. And just as I'm about to relax, a shadow looms over the cage. Or rather, two shadows...
