Chapter 2
Walls. I shudder once more. Walls. A bleak word, meaning nothing. A HUMAN word. Therefore an evil word. Forbidden. Unspoken. Walls. That's why the floor is so clean. That's why it's so unnaturally dark. That's why I'm trapped. The events of last night come flooding back to me. A party. It was wild, crazy. I was out long past I was meant to be; drinking much more than I was meant to; flirting with boys who I wasn't meant to. I got caught. Taken home. I hadn't realised but there was an important meeting on. A political meeting, and I, as the Crown Princess, had to be there. But I wasn't. So they dragged me back, tipsy as a tadpole. And guess what turned up? Humans, that's what. The whole court closed up, like clams, appearing to be just small grey rocks covered in moss. But I just had to sneeze, didn't I? And that was enough to turn the head if the smallest human, a woman. "It moved." Her and her companions strode towards us, nets in one hand, cages in the other. She slowly picked up all the stones, one by one, until she got to my mother, the queen. I couldn't stand it anymore, us noble faeries being man-handled in this way, so I got up, unfurled my mossy wings, and fought back. I was drunk, and stupid, but at least after they got one of us, they left everyone else alone. And now I'm here. In a human's box. With walls, and a hard, clean floor, and no light.
But suddenly the light turns on.
