Chapter 5 Run
She gasped. Deacon awoke, to find a gaping maid standing staring at him. He had to go, run, anywhere. He leaped up, have her one quick glance, grabbed his belongings and rushed out. The thing that surprised him most about the maid was that her expression was not frightened, surprised, or angry, it was ... disappointed? He ran up the corridor, looking for an exit. He could not shake off the feeling that someone was still watching him, so he ran up a flight of stairs, along a few more corridors, then found himself in the most fancy place he had ever seen. How did anyone get money to afford such beautiful objects as these? He really wanted a drink, and he hadn't eaten since breakfast. He went in search of food, and found himself in a large girl's bedroom. A cup in the side was filled with water, and some plates nearby had assorted sweet meats on them. He gobbled up a handful of sticky, sugary sweets and drank a gulp of water from the cup. That was much better. He put the cup in his bag, in case he needed something to drink out of, and took a sweet meat or three to eat. He still felt as though someone was watching him. Well, who was there to watch him? Everyone was asleep. He ran back along the many corridors, and in finding the servants quarters, ran in the opposite direction until he found a door into the garden, so ran outside and slept in the large careful arms of the old oak tree.
