7 October 2012

I can't believe it when I open my eyes. Through the windscreen I see three kids. Worse, Holly's sister's kids. I open the truck door and walk over to Holly. "Look I'm sorry, I was afraid you wouldn't come," she comes towards me.

I'm in shock. "I've never met those....."

"Kids?" she finishes my sentence. We sit down on the bench and watch them. She runs her fingers down my abs and over my chest, clipping me once or twice with her ring.

"I'm no good with kids." I whisper smoothing her cheek.

"Look, it's easy....that's Josh, he's 13, Luke, he's 7 and little Rosie, she's 3. I'm going to buy some ice creams, look after them for me will you?"

"And do what?" I panic.

"Baby, you'll think of something, I'll take Rosie." She calls the toddler over and Holly picks her up.

I walk over to where the boys are. The oldest is looking like a right plonker in a hoodie on his phone. The other kid is paddling in the lake. I sit down beside the hoodie kid.

"Hi." I say.

He looks up from his mobile phone, "Hi," he looks back down, his fingers frantically pressing on various buttons, "And by the way, don't try, your the kind of guy who will do a crap job."

Who is this kid?

"You don't know me."

He gives me a weird look.

"I was a loner like you. Bit of a Chav are we?" I challenge him.

"Who am I texting then my gran?" he fires back.

That kid just owned me. "Yeah, your right I am crap, a crap guy with a crap life." I admit.

He laughs. I laugh back. We sit in silence until I see Holly and Rosie walking down the path. "Seeing as we are stuck with each other for the weekend don't make my life any more miserable," he whispers.

"What are you my Dad?" I snap.

He glares at me and walks down the bank to find his brother.

**************** "What did you do?" Holly whispers as we peg the tent down, "He's miserable."

"He owned me Hols, I'm not the kid. He is," I explain.

"What did you say to him?"

"I told him that he's not my Dad. Josh is such a idiot and I would use other words like...."

"There Father passed away 2 weeks ago Matt. Jodie needed some time alone that's why were with them." I couldn't believe what I was hearing. A pang of guilt hits me.

I hug Holly. "You shouldn't be making it up to me!" she snaps.

I unzip the tent and climb in. Holly follows. "Talk to him at dinner," she whispers resting her head on my chest.

"I will," I begin, "Well it sure is roomy in here. Let's say we set up the kids tents and head down to dinner."

"No we can go down now."

"I don't want to put up the kids tents after dark."

"What are you on about?" her eyelids flicker, "This is our tent. The kids tent too."

I groan. This is the weekend from hell!
