~*/Chapter II\*~ >~Surname: May~<
April watched for only a brief second as the bus trundled away before she turned and headed towards the grand mansion at the end of the long driveway. Snow began to fall, and she turned her walk to a brisk jog the remaining distance to the servants entrance. At least the snow decided to wait for her to return before it started. She didn't really fancy being stuck out in this all night.
Shakily, she unlocked the door, and quickly slammed it shut behind her, leaning against it in the hopes it would shut out some of the cold. But she hoped in vain. The servants quarters had no heating, nor any insulation to keep any slight warmth in. It was always freezing, even in the summer when it practically roasted you to step outside.
Clutching the bags, she headed to the kitchen to pack away the supplies. Just as she was about to enter, she was stopped by a strong hand on her shoulder.
"Well well, Miss April May! I see you've decided to grace us all with your presence!" She turned around to find herself face to face with Master Jones (well, more of face to chest - he was a lot taller than her).
"Tell me, May, why is it that it takes you almost two hours to do what everyone else can do in thirty minutes?" His voice seemed to throb through her head with pounding resonance as she looked up at his ugly, red face.
"I- I'm sorry, Master, b- but it wasn't my fault! The bus was over an hour late, and the journey was slow because of fallen trees in the road. I can assure you, this won't happen to me again!" April didn't really know what else to tell him, but she could tell from his eyes that all her promises meant nothing. He pushed her away from him, and towards the kitchen's door.
"You promise it won happen again? So you admit it was in your control for it not to happen this time, then! Selfish child! You've caused us all a great deal of worry! I even contemplated sending someone else to buy supplies, on the chance that you had run off, taking our money with you! Well, I'm telling you now, you will not be entrusted with an errand outside of the Manor again! You shall be confined indoors for the remainder of your days! Now pack away those foodstuffs before they spoil, and go to your bed!" With an angry snort, he turned on his heel, heading back into the main house to check on his Lord and Lady. As if on auto-pilot, April did exactly as she had been told.
Her bed wasn't exactly a bed - just a pile of cloth in the corner of the kitchen. But it was an improvement on her previous bed - just the corner of the kitchen. She was grateful for it.
