'Evans' It was Potter. I'd been feeling a bit better these past few days. His voice only caused a mild headache now.
'What?' I was feeling irritable.
'Hey, I'm sorry about Sirius.'
So it was Black who poisoned me.
'Why the hell did he try to poison me? Try to kill Sev and now me? He's gonna be a bloody murderer when he grows up. If he can wait that long.'
'He wasn't trying to kill you. Food poisoning is easy to cure and I agree. He was a prick and he shouldn't have done any of that. I'm sorry.'
I looked at him. He seemed so modest. Modest. A foreign personality to James Potter.
'Okay. I'm not all right with it though. And I still want to find out Lupin's secret. If it's dangerous I need to know.'
'Evans...' he warned.
'Put a sock in it Potter. If you won't tell me then I'll have to find out and I'd appreciate it of you didn't try to kill me again.' I was looking straight into his eyes. He looked deadly serious despite my patronising and sarcastic tone, one that would usually have triggered one of his infuriating smirks. It made my stomach feel weird. Why did he have to be so good looking?
'Walk with me to Potions?' Wow. He'd never been that... nice to me before. He actually sounded like a decent guy when he said that.
'Go on then. I suppose I should incase I collapse or something.' Well I had to make it as unromantic as possible to stay in safe territory.
'So Potter, apart from duelling prefects and attempting to kill people, what have to been up to recently?' I said conversationally. It was weird having a genuine, civil conversation with him; I never had before. He raised his eyebrows at me.
'Well we charmed Avery's robes so they would gradually get more and more transparent.' he said as of he was trying to guess what would be a worthy answer. I actually laughed. What was wrong with me?
'I ought to give you a detention for that.' His eyes went mock wide and scared,
'Oh you wouldn't? Please don't Miss Evans, that would be terrible.'
I laughed and rolled my eyes. Je was actually pretty good company.
We walked up to the dungeons door and revived a few raised eyebrows and smirks from The Marauders. I gave Black a withering glare and went to join Jody.
'You walked up here with Potter? I thought you hated him?'
'Hate? Well, no I don't hate him. Just strongly dislike. And he was good company.'
She laughed.
'I guess you're giving him the benefit of the doubt right? Incase he was imperiused and that's why he was a jerk all these years.'
'Yeah, sounds about right.' I grinned at her.
'New partners today. Yippee.' she said sarcastically.
'I'm gonna end up with a Marauder. I just know it.'
'You're probably right. Fate's a bitch.'
I looked at her quizzically.
'Fate? Best not to ask, right?'
'Or best to sit back and find out.' she teased.
'Oh shut up.' No I had no idea what she was talking about but I could've sworn she was talking about Potter.
One look at the board at the front told me I was right. Just my luck.
I dumped my bad on a table just as I heard Potter call, 'Evans!' in a very bright voice.
'Did you bribe Slughorn or something? Using your Slug Club privileges? Or do I just have rotten luck?' He just beamed at me.
'I know. I'm so excited about this pairing too. We'll have such fun.'
'You do realise I only walked to class with you? That's nothing to be in high spirits about.'
He was so happy and carefree I almost thought he'd been sniffing doxy droppings. Yup. Ew.
And we were making love potions. It wasn't even Christmas and we were preparing for Valentines Day? I swore Slughorn was matchmaking or something.
After half an hour of screaming at Potter not to add in various ingredients unless he wanted to give the recipient diarrhoea or hallucinations, my nerves couldn't take any more. I snatched the knife off him and began chopping the berries up the right way and snapped,
'Honestly Potter, can't you do anything? You're useless.'
'Who cares about a stupid potion? It's not like we'll ever use it.'
I stared at him in disbelief.
'I would not.' he insisted.
'Yeah right.'
I turned back to our cauldron and added a splash of vanilla essence (to make it nice and sweet. My own touch).
Professor Slughorn peered into our cauldron and beamed at me.
'Miss Evans. Perfect as always. Vanilla am I right? Nice touch.'
'Thank you Professor.'
I glared at Potter as he mimicked me.
'Honestly Evans don't you have even a trace of a rebellious side?'
'Potter. I have respect. That's what got me to be a prefect. I don't think you have much of that either.'
He brushed my retort aside.
'Evans? You want to have some fun? Meet us at the statue of Desmond the Desperate at 7.30.'
Us. The Marauders. Oh why not? And I could get in some watching Remus time too. I must have been mad.
'All right Potter.'
He looked surprised.
'Who has no rebellious side?'
He grinned, 'Bring Melissa.'
