Instinct: Chapter 1 (Part 1)

Leo

I could not allow myself to sleep. If I did sleep, I would not have realised when she slipped out of our bed. However, earlier tonight when I was brushing my teeth I had popped two caffeine tablets. It was easy to stay awake then.

It was becoming apparent she was practised in the art of stealth, for she didn't make a sound creeping from the room or going down the stairs. I lay completely still holding my breath to make sure I didn’t make a noise until I heard the front door click close. It was practically impossible to shut that particular door silently, yet, somehow, the noise had been much more restrained and I imagined it was achieved by inching the door gently and slowly shut. Still, I heard it and that was my cue to chase.

I had prepared for this by carefully selecting clothes I could put on quickly and hanging them over the back of the chair near the bed. Having no time to lose, I quickly pulled my joggers over my underpants and wrestled my T-Shirt over my head. I was still pushing my arms out the sleeves as I dashed down the stairs. At the bottom I slid my bare feet into my trainers. I had no time for socks, having already learned how quickly she moved.

This wasn't the first time I had tried to catch her at her game. Only last night, I had had waited until she snuck out and then raced to the bedroom window to see what she was up to. Despite my hurry I had not been quick enough. I only just managed to catch a glimpse of her silhouette in the street light as she disappeared around the corner. This time I wasn’t going to wait to be certain she was gone. I was getting desperate and no longer cared about the outcome.

I barely bothered closing the door as I was more concerned with trying to keep her in sight. It didn’t matter though, she was already gone. I could see her shadow was receding, my only indication she was traveling in the same direction as the previous night. I ran as fast as I could to the end of the road. It was imperative that I catch her up. I had to know where she was going.
