Instinct: Chapter 1 (Part 2)

Leo

Her whereabouts had troubled me ever since I had woken in the night to visit the bathroom and discovered she was gone. I went looking and calling for her throughout the house but I couldn’t find her anywhere. It was chilling. I didn’t know what to do. Despite dating for almost two years I realised I knew very little about her social circles. She had not yet introduced me to any of her friends or family. Her flat seemed eerie and empty without her presence, as I looked for an address book to give a clue as to where she might go, but there was nothing. As I sat alone at the end of the bed, I began to worry as I tried to fathom what might have happened to cause her to leave in the middle of the night without an explanation. My thoughts began to darken and my mind questioned her commitment to our relationship. Was she cheating on me, and who was the man she snuck away to see in the middle of the night?

My mind began to recall how reluctant she had been when we first met to spend a night together. I assumed that due to her goddess good looks she just wasn't interested but she kept coming back for more and I wasn't going to say no. As the evening came to an end I could see her getting fidgety and then the excuses came and she would find a reason to need to leave. I tried to break up with her over it a few times but she would turn up in the most unusual places, like the back of the taxi after the Christmas party and in the lift on my way up to my office. She had no inhibitions and the sex was good but I wanted someone I could share my soul with and I knew even back then she was keeping secrets. She turned me into her willing bootycall, unable to say no to those seductive green eyes and eventually I began to not care about her secrets, I was willing to take whatever she’d give.

Finally even she had to admit that we were meant to be together and she gave in and I was allowed to sleep at her flat. It probably sounds insignificant to most people but this was a big deal to us, as she opened her front door, I knew I was entering a world no other man had been invited into before.

It had felt good at the time, sharing our lives together, but now I worried I had bullied her into it. Maybe all this secrecy was a rebellion against my will and I deserved what punishment was to come. She had never been one for talking, but if she could confide in me, perhaps we could fix things. I waited all night for her to return home, sitting in the hardback chair. The questions continued to mount up in my mind and the answers still eluded me. I found an old suduko book that I had bought as entertainment for a long train journey some months ago and began to complete the puzzles in a method of distraction. My mind got weary and my eyes began to tire, I soon found my weary body crawling back under the duvet cover in search of a cure for my sleep deprivation. My heavy eyelids carried the weight of my shoulders and finally they gave in and I drifted off into a deep slumber.
