Instinct: Chapter 2 (Part 2)
Kate
As I paid my entry fee, I drifted into the mist of hopeless souls. We were crammed into the wooden barn like caged battery hens. Strobe lights danced across the sea of heads bobbing and swaying to the music. I pushed my way past the masses, my nose twitching at the scent of sweat, looking for that unique smell that I was hunting. The stench was sudden and caused me to catch my breath. My eyes flared in its direction.
There they were, behind the DJ booth, salivating on the delights of a gourmet meal before them. The humans danced away, oblivious to their own peril, probably too high on drugs to care or appreciate their own lives.
Then I saw her, the leader of the pack. Her name was Luna. We had come to blows before. Her amber eyes were searching through the masses for the chosen one. I knew it was her, as soon as my eyes found that familiar scar, etched onto her face. A reminder I had left her during our battle around 5 years ago. In all my years, she was the only one ever to get away. It had been my first lesson, to never bite off more than you can chew. To be honest, I too was lucky to be alive. I traced my finger across the triangular scar on my wrist and wondered whether I had once again placed myself in a situation beyond my means. Luna had the largest following I had ever met. Now, she had crossed back into my territory.
Luna mad her way onto the dance floor and threw her head around like a rocker, the scent of her long blonde hair swung around, wafting into the noses of her following. Her hungry pack followed their noses eagerly, trying to rub against her nape. I had seen this ritual all too often. They swayed, aroused and engrossed in her scent. I kept my distance, not wanting to be detected.
It happened so fast, I almost missed it. I was so busy trying to keep a low profile, I almost didn't notice what they were doing. Their mass was backing a group of ravers out a doorway at the back of the barn. I knew it would look too obvious if I followed them out that door.
I raced to the front of the barn. Drunk, hopeless people kept falling into me, blocking my exit. I pushed them roughly. The bruises they received from my brutality would be a lot less than what those being herded out the back were about to experience. The guy at the front had gone, probably already joined Luna.
I pounced up onto the barn roof and run diagonally towards the other corner. I sat in wait, as I tried to figure out what to do. I counted them, there was thirteen including Luna.
"Thirteen - unlucky for some," I thought.
