Instinct - Chapter 2.3 (Kate)

Instinct: Chapter 2 (Part 3)

Kate

Thirteen unfortunately, was more than I had anticipated. Luna was a
powerful avatar but so was I. We represented different sides of the
same coin, she was canine and I was feline. Obviously the coin was
more complex than that and had more than two sides but that wasn't
important here. I didn't really want to fight Luna again, but if it
came down to it, this time I'd... a small growl rippled inside me.

Luckily they didn't hear me, as in that moment, I saw her bear her
teeth at the party goers and let out a deep growl of her own. A black
guy with dreads was so high he didn’t notice and kept grinning and
swaying to the music. He didn’t seem to realise he was now outside.
The others though, quickly sobered up.

The first to run was a girl with pink hair. She ran screaming as she
went. Her friend, with vibrant red hair, was quick on her heels.
Although, girl two wasn’t quite as scared. She was more intent on
catching her friend up and calming her down. A guy with a bright
blue T-shirt had a delayed and staggered start. He had turned
suddenly, twisting his ankle and causing him to trip. When he began
to run he was clearly limping in pain. At least he was on the move
now; hopefully his good sense would save him from anything worse than
a twisted ankle.

The second guy stood rubbing his eyes. Luna was now foaming viciously
at the mouth, preparing to shift; her eyes aglow with hunger.
Suddenly he realised that no amount of rubbing his face was going to
change what he could see. "Shit!" He proclaimed. He turned and
sprinted towards the girls and limping guy, realising he had to catch
up or get ahead to survive. The others around Luna were starting to
flare their teeth in anticipation, preparing for the hunt. As the
wall of hungry teeth revealed itself the remaining two girls and guy
took notice of the blasphemy that was their fate. Although, it was
probably too late for them, they ran anyway.

Luna let them gain some distance, she enjoyed this part - the chase.
Finally, she decided the victims had a decent enough head start and
gave lead. She raced across the field in pursuit. Light ran across
their body as the transformation from human to wolf took place.
Bright flashes echoed behind her and soon a pack of wolves were hot on
the heels of the three stragglers. As they neared up they pounced,
grabbing the victim by the neck and pulling them to the ground.
Quickly they ripped into their easy prey. The head start was not
nearly enough of a challenge for them.

I jumped from the roof and headed back through the door into the barn.
I nipped behind the DJ booth and turned off the music. There was a
disappointed chorus. I knew they wouldn’t believe me if I announced
werewolves outside. Humans had the ridiculous curiosity about such
things and would want proof before believing anything and usually
those that got their proof also took their last breath.

I had done this routine many times before and knew exactly how to get
the reaction I needed. “The police are coming!” I yelled over the
microphone. “The police will be here any minute!”

They had definitely heard me the second time as they all started
dispersing out the front of the barn and began making their way home.
No-one wanted to be caught at an illegal rave, especially with drugs
on them. They knew if the police came, many of them would get
arrested and questioned and possibly even charged. Police was a
danger they were all familiar with.

I now had to catch up with the hunt. I knew three lives were already
lost. The black guy was still swaying by the back door. I tapped him
on the shoulder.

“Easy now,” he grinned at me and staggered a little on turning to face me.

“The police are coming.” I gave the warning.

“Nice.” He smiled.

“You need to go that way.” I pointed towards the front.

He squinted his eyes as if he was having difficulty making out where I
meant. In all fairness, he probably couldn’t see a damn thing.
Without question he began stumbling towards the front of the barn and
I prayed that the fool would make it home alive. Now the real
race began. It was unlikely I would be able to save any of them today
unless I could kill Luna. If I could kill her, the hunt would be off
to mourn her. If I couldn’t, I’d have a number of bodies to dispose
off so I wouldn’t have the authorities investigating on my turf. I
hate wolves, they are so damn messy!
