Part 2: The Chase
'Is that you?', she called, 'quit fooling around Sammie!'
No reply.
'I mean it, stop' she tried to sound angry but the last word was nothing but a soft whimper, a whine. She heard a low throaty laugh. One shape moved toward her menacing. It was a boy.
She turned to run, stumbling in the darkness. Leaves and twigs made it slippy and hard, catching her legs, cutting and grabbing at her clothes as if they didn't want her to get away. She knew she had to keep going but she was not heading in the right direction, she was was moving deeper into the woods. She could hear him behind her, his pace steady and easy, hers clumsy and faltering.
She slid down a slope and trying to get back up she fell over a large root but scrambled behind behind a large tree trunk that had fallen over.
Trying not to breathe too heavily she listened to him, the person who chased her. She heard breathing and the soft footsteps moved close to where she was hiding. With tears tumbling from her eyes onto her face, she clamped her hand over her mouth and tried to quieten her sobs and gasps. Drenched with sweat and trembling with fear she listened. She heard the person turn and the footsteps retreat. Wait, there was more than one set of footsteps.
