Ok so the original question was approaching girls, but I wanted to be a bit more general. To start I have never had any success when trying to approach girls, my main problem being that I lack confidence in that area.
If I had to give any advice just be yourself,people say this doesn't work but if it doesn't they are not the right person. You should never change who you are to just try impress a girl if you plan to have a partner for life.
It won't happen instantly either, these things take time and effort and that will pay off. Looks can only get you so far but personality is what a partner falls in love with.
Now the way I would go about it is just ask them if they would like to do something, such as seeing a movie or going out for something to eat. You can't simply just jump into it, learn about each other first, learn the things you love about the person you like.
