I wake sharply, my breath catching in my throat. Some nights are like this. They happen all too often, and they're all the same: I'm in a river and get to where I need to go. I then die right when I take another step. It has to be booby trapped. There's no other answer. I lay on my back, and the alarm screeches it's daily wail. I turn over and smack it off.
The silence is louder, so I decide to get up. I get my iPod and headphones, scroll to The Used, and blast I Come Alive.
Now in musical heaven, I dress, choosing a tight pink rocker shirt, and black skinny jeans. I brush my hair, sweeping it over one eye. People think of me as Emo, but I think of myself as me. I don't bother labeling people. It's just not right.
After I am dressed and ready, I walk over and open a water bottle, and take a sip. It cools me instantly. It's early summer, but I have a job at a local antiques shop, called AVASIN'S ANTIQUTIES. I don't start for another hour, but leave anyway.
Embracing the soft warmth, I suddenly regret wearing a long sleeve shirt. It wasn't the best idea. Sighing, I grab my bike and pedal out of the drive slowly.
I'm alone in my house, but am lookin for a roommate. Just someone who won't be a total jerk, or a complete slob/sloth. Basically Mr. Perfect. Too bad he'll never exist. I am so wrapped up in my thoughts, that I don't even notice a black tabby cat in my way.
"HEY CAN'T YOU SEE ME?!" The cat screeches as I swerve to miss him. I press my shaking hands to my to the hot brakes just in time, missing him by mere millimeters. I stare, and so does he. Recognition washes over my tanned face, and I say,
" Hello, Orion. Haven't seen you in what, a month? Where were you?" Orion is an Enchanted cat. Yes, I am really Wiccan. That river was a dream, but my magic is not. Orion stared fiercely, his slitting eyes boring a hole into my very soul. I felt scrutinized, that he was searching for answers to questions I didn't know.
"I was with Penber. He is wanting to speak with you. It is VERY urgent" Orion purred, as if he was satisfied with completing his task.
"Is that all?"Silence. I repeat impatiently, "IS THAT ALL?"
"oh yes! That is all. See you at home. Orion winked, and then dissappeared in a cloud of putrid black smoke.
"That cat's sure got issues." I mutter softly, and pedal in the completely wrong direction.
******** The scarlet sun bleeds a maroon glow onto the lush forest, illuminating the mansion. A black, sleek Mercedes Benz Ultima rolls into the gravel driveway, risking a flat tire. Pallo Mercio Penber, otherwise known as Dad, steps out, a scornful look upon his adonesque face. He looks down the hill as I pull Into the paved Bike path. I park my bike in a slot and pull a pink bike lock and fasten it around both pedals.
"Violet. Good to see you're here safely." Dad and I never talk much. We're just not that close anymore. I live in that house due to him not wanting to deal with teen drama. He won the state lottery three years prior, so he just forgot about me. I miss the old times.
"yes. Dad, why am I here? Orion just told me to go to your house." dad was a sorcerer, up until the money came in. Then he gave up his magic.
"Orion is not lying. Come, we have a certain private matter to discuss. We'll Have coffee." I step forward, and my mind, ( which never spoke before,) said "be careful! Danger lurks in darker dimensions, as Well as this one. Be strong, Violet. I love you." I stop dead. Mom had just talked to me. I'd know that voice anywhere. Did she really though?
"Violet, come." father says sternly, holding out his hand. I take it, my mind blanker than ever.
