The black rabbit is a beast like no other. It lures it's victims out into the dark and 'stops their time'. They say it's velvet black ears are decorated with piercings to represent each of their victims. No-one dares imagine who this fearsome beasts owner is. For the 'queen of hearts' must be even more pitiless than her pet.
The city where this deadly children's tale originated was a small one. The residents were all perfectly normal for a small city; you had the pleasant people who would say 'good morning' and the less pleasant folk who would punch you if you looked at them the wrong way in the morning. The girl this story is following is in the middle of these two extremes. She is called Annie, and she lives alone in an apartment in a friendly part of the city. She is 17, and doesn't know any facts about herself before the age of 12, when she found herself in hospital after a car-crash and no sign of any parents. Annie has long black hair and rather 'sharp' eyes that give her a permanent look of deep, philosophical thought. She is just under the average height for her age, but has a slender figure most girls would diet for years to achieve. She doesn't dress extravagantly, and doesn't draw attention to herself if she can help it. She studies hard and works in a cafe to earn money for rent and food. And we will be joining her on her first day of high-school.
