He was running as fast as he could. Not thinking about anything else than his feet and the ones chasing him. Not looking at anything but the forest ahead of him. He went in between the trees, looking for a place to hide, where they wouldn't find them. He was desperate. Even though he knew they would catch him, his human instinct made him keep on trying to run faster, to find a safe place. He stopped for a second, listened. Just when he thought he might have lost them he heard the quick, almost silent footsteps of the Hunters and their terrifying wolves. He started running again, trying to reach the centre of the forest, where the big trees were. His last and only chance was to climb one. He stopped right before a massive oak tree with easy climbing branches. As he pulled himself up he heard them coming closer. The Hunters were not more than a hundred metres away, so he had to stay completely still.
It hadn't been more than a week since they tracked him down. He had been living in one of his usual hiding places near the forest overlooking the lake. They had come when he was asleep, but his instinct as a Runner made him get out if the house before they found his bed. He had then been running for almost four days, and he was more exhausted than any ordinary person would be able to handle.
He could hear them very clearly now. They were just underneath him. He could almost smell the horrible breath of the wolves, but he couldn't make out what the Hunters were talking about.
