chapter 14
As Daniel stood on the hill the memories flooded back to when he was last here, the day his life was changed forever.
The house was dark when daniel stepped in with his mother. He went to switched the light on but instead of a burst of light all that could be heard was the quiet click of the switch. "mum theres no electricity." wined Daniel. "I'll get a candle." his mother replied ruffling his hair before walking off.
Daniel took his shoes off and made his way down the hall and into the kitchen where his mother had gone. "Mum?" he called out. There was no reply. Making his way over to the cabinet he picked up a candle and lit it with a match. The glow of the candle filled the room and Daniel was able to see again.
He looked around the large kitchen behind the table Daniel could see an arm stretched out, the hand relaxed.
Walking over his eyes fell upon his father, laying still his body white as a pool of blood stretched around him.
Daniels breath caught in his throat as he stepped back with a gasp, his legs gave way and he fell to the hard floor breathing heavily his mouth opening and closing in shock.
A piercing scream filled the house and made his blood run cold. His mother!
Getting up he turned and ran up the stairs his feet thudding on the old wood.
"Mum?!" he shouted pushing open the door to his parents bedroom the candle lighting his way.
A gust of wind from the open window put out his candle with a hiss.
Dropping it Daniel walked forward, the curtains blowing and papers from his fathers desk covered the floor.
He rushed over and pulled the window shut, turning around quickly as he heard the bedroom door slam.
"Mum?" he whispered taking a step towards the door.
A loud cry and the sound of someone hitting the floor after a long fall caught his attention.
"Mum!" he yelled racing forward rattling the door handle and pulling it hard.
It wouldn't open. He kicked and shouted until the door flew open pushing Daniel into the wall opposite.
He lay heaped on the floor in the darkness as a small figure advanced towards him.
She looked like the walking dead her skin paper white clad in a little white dress with frills and a dark patch of red stained the front. It appeared to be blood.
"Daniel come here." the little girl said her arm outstretched. "don't be scared."
Daniel backed up against the wall as his small sister came closer.
"Zoey." he croaked his heart aching with sorrow as he looked at his young sibling.
Suddenly Zoey stopped her hand falling limp by her side as she fell to the floor a dark smoke left her and floated out of the room.
"Zoey." shouted Daniel rushing forward and pulling the small body to him. Rocking back and forth with her in his arms.
Looking down at her face her eyes were open but looked peaceful as if she had never expected the person who took her life to ever do such a thing. She had trusted her murderer Daniel realised with a start.
He walked to their parents bed and led her down closing her eyes with his finger tips.
Fear gripped him tightly making his palms sweat and his limbs shake.
Suddenly the lights switched on basking the house in light once more.
Feeling slightly braver Daniel left the room and made his way downstairs into the sitting room.
He had to find his mum before he could leave, he couldn't leave her here, He couldn't.
He pushed open the living room door and was nearly sick at the sight before him.
His uncle lay on the floor his throat slit, his eyes open in horror. Blood was splattered on the walls, furniture, everywhere.
Daniel swallowed the lump in his throat making it hard to breath, tears ran down his face and he realised his jumper was soaked with them.
He ran out of the room slamming the door behind him.
He needed to get out of here now.
"Mum" he screamed.
There was no reply.
Running down the hall he tripped and fell, he opened his eyes looking back at him was the tired, confused eyes of his grandfather.
He was red all over his white hair stained red with blood.
His mouth open as if he had been shouting out when he died.
Daniel closed his eyes in despair.
Sobs racked through his body.
Why his family? Why not someone else's?
That must of been the sound of someone hitting the floor he thought to himself as he stood up, his legs were wobbly and he felt quite faint.
A hand on his shoulder startled him and he spun round to see his mother standing there.
"Mum." he said his voice shaky. "we've got to get out of here."
A loud wailed filled his ears followed by the opening and closing of every door in the large house.
The banging was almost unbearable and Daniel couldn't take much more, grabbing his mothers hand he pulled her down the hallway towards the front door.
The lights were flickering now and the whole house felt like it was going to burst.
Daniel ran. He ran how you would imagine a twelve year old boy would run away from a murderer who'd just done away with his family.
Just before he reached the door his mother stopped. "Mum come on!" shouted Daniel looking at her with wide eyes.
She pulled her hand away from his and pulled out a knife from her pocket.
"Mum?"
She lifted the blade to her throat and cut it slowly the blood spurted out.
Daniel stood his eyes not able to leave the blade that was ending his mothers life.
"No" he whispered as his mother fell to his feet.
A smoke hovered around him and Daniel stared watching it as it tried to enter him.
He closed his eyes and mind off, letting only his inner strength take control pushing against the being that was trying to hurt him.
When he opened his eyes the smoke was gone, he breathed out and opened his front door the night calling to him.
He stepped out and stared at the house that was no longer his home.
He would avenge his family even if doing so took his last breath.
He wiped his tears and pulled his arms around his shaking body.
He was alone in the world from now on.
Present day.
Daniel walked into the pub taking off his bag from his back he sat down and asked for some whiskey.
He hated being back here. It brought back bad memories.
People were staring at him Strangely, muttering amongst themselves shooting him weary smiles and passive nods.
He ignored them.
Two chaps sat down on the table nearest two him and their conversation flooded his ears.
"It's not been a very nice place to live the past year, children dying and what not." His companion nodded "and Strange happening going on in that cave on the edge of town."
Daniel stiffened getting up he hoisted his bag on.
"sir your whiskey" "got to go." he muttered stepping around the barmaid.
"but you've paid." she protested. " keep the money." he replied before stepping out. He placed his hat on and stood rubbing his beard,
It was time someone put a stop to those demons and completed his families work. And as he was the only one left that someone was going to be him.
