Once upon a time a beautiful woman called Maria, lived in a small town in Mexico. Not only was she beautiful, she was also very arrogant.
Determined not to marry a man from pueblo, she looked for one with wealth, good looks and status.
Such a man came by, she charmed him but never gave herself to him knowing this would make him hers.
They married she gave him two children. Soon after he became bored and left town without her.
She became distraught and blamed the children for the fall from his grace.
Throwing the children into the river she ended their lives. Returning to sanity she realised what she had done and threw herself into the same river.
Now whenever there is a full moon the villagers hear her cries, "my children, my children. " As the ghost of Maria searches for her little lost souls.
(this is one of many versions of an old Mexican legend)
