What a common question! Haha seems like many people have the same concern. I say the more special the gift, the more you care for him. If you buy him something he needs(not wants) it could be taken as a friendship act. Analyze his personality, like if it's sporty something from his favorite team. There is always that sale in the perfume shop on V' day!
