In summer it bears about 170,000 leaves, with surface area of around 675 square metres. Evaporation from their surface will draw up roughly 220 litres of water an hour from the roots and release it as water vapour into the atmosphere, form clouds & eventually fall as rain miles away. Also when it comes to the volume of water it consumes is equivalent to the contents of 10 typical car petrol tanks, every hour. Where would we be without trees like the beech?
