This is a piece of a larger work, this is the very beginning. I don't have a title for it yet, though have ideas...
----- I reached out in front of me. Just a little further, I thought… I could see the light. The golden brightness ahead looked so succulent. Not today, it taunted me. Today wasn't the day to reach the light. The light moved away, higher and higher, smaller and smaller… I blinked again, petrified by my attempt to overcome the shadows below, only for it to leave me. I took a breath, and held onto this wall I scaled. Something was wrong. It crumbled under my hands, the harder I squeezed. I looked around, and to my dismay, the light wasn’t rising, but I was falling. I could barely see the light now, everything was so dark... I twisted around to see where I was going. I looked down at the heart of the darkness. All I saw was pure, raw darkness, seething from the depths, waiting to claim me.
