The world was dark. White light gently sparkled against the ebony backdrop of my subconscious. Soft blues mixed. A pale purple quietly joined in the dance. Grass greens leaped and soared. The cacophony of colors spun slowly in my head, carefree. I suddenly felt my body smack into consciousness. An angry red splattered across my beautiful painting. Sorrow filled my heart. Before I could sigh in despair, sharp pain coursed through my body. A cry of agony tore itself from my dry lips. I felt warm air drift over my face and arms but saw nothing. Nothing except for the ugly red. Panic sunk in and I gripped my sheets in terror. The action caused the red to expand and I cried out again, my fingers quickly releasing the sheets. I tried blinking rapidly but the action did nothing. Panic infiltrated my mind and my rational thoughts flew...away. The pain. Oh god, the pain. Ah it hurts so much. Please, somebody. Anybody please! Can't. Can't. Can't. Can't see! Find. Must find. Jack. Jack help. Help me please. Falling. Falling off bed. More pain. Oh god somebody kill me. Ah. Must...not...scream. Cannot. Scream. Suck in air and scream anyways. Please. Jack. Jack. Jack... Jack.....Ja......

The world was dark.

The light streamed through the window as I opened the door to Echo's apartment. I smiled gently. She would probably be sleeping peacefully still. I quietly placed the keys on a small hook by the door. Grinning slyly, I headed towards the kitchen, planning to make her coffee before she woke. I chuckled at my own ingenious plan as I fiddled with her coffee maker. Soon, the apartment would smell like Starbucks but it would be my master skills instead. I grinned triumphantly. Oh yes. Suddenly I heard a loud thump. Did Echo have another stray in the apartment? I shook my head and told myself to reprimand her later. Then, I heard a shrill scream. Echo. I bolted from the kitchen and down the small hall. Kicking open Echo's stubborn door, I found her writhing on the floor. Crying out, I scrambled over to her trembling body. Her eyes were wide open but she didn't seem to see me. I looked at her full lips as they struggled to form words. No, not words. My name. I gently stroked her hair. I told her over and over I was there. She kept silently speaking. She couldn't hear me. A spasm made her entire body rock. A shuddering gasp made her small frame seem delicate. She collapsed against me. I was torn apart inside. I didn't know what to do. Instinct took over my body. What I was about to do HAD to work. I cupped her face. Her lips trembled and I placed mine over hers with a soft, sweeping motion. The shuddering stopped. Silence was thick in the air. Then, Echo sucked in the still air and her eyelids fluttered. Her breath was released in a sigh and her misty gray eyes opened. Slowly, shakily, she placed her palm on my cheek and gave me a small smile. " and the prince woke the princess with a kiss..." She murmured. I smiled and clasped my hand over hers. "And so he did."
