After a minute of the most tender kiss he had ever experienced, common sense got the better of him and he pulled away. 'I'm so sorry Kathryn. I can't.' She looked at him, completely crestfallen. His heart ached but his head was in control. 'I have a wife and I'm not the sort of man who has affairs. Anyway, you deserve more than that.' At that precise moment she would have given anything to be his bit on the side but she respected his honesty even though it broke her heart. 'What now then?' she said sadly. 'Now?' he asked, talking to himself more than to her. He paused and then replied sternly, 'Now Kathryn you must go back to your life. Back to reality. You need to forget about me and find yourself a fine young man, assuming you haven't got one already?' She shook her head. 'No. There was someone. We were married but it wasn't right for me. He was a good man but I had to leave for my own sanity. I was quite happy on my own until I set eyes on you.' He sighed. 'Kathryn, I have to confess that you have turned my head. I've never had a reason to look for anyone else but...I don't know. You caught my eye. I have to tell you the truth though. There is no future here. I have to go back to my wife. You have to go back to your own life.'
With that he stood up and with tears in his eyes he bent down and kissed her one last time. 'Goodbye Kathryn. I'll never forget those beautiful eyes.'
She watched him walk away, her heart feeling as if it was exploding in her chest. He turned to wave goodbye as he went up the stairs and she raised a hand to wave and said hopefully 'Call me'. He shook his head and was gone.
