'Unknown Caller' she said to no-one in particular as she picked up her ringing mobile. She looked at it. Would it be a PPI call? Probably. She was about to reject the call but something told her to answer. 'Hello' she said impatiently expecting the usual cold call spiel. 'Kathryn?' an anxious voice asked. 'Yes, who is it?' she asked excitedly. She recognised the voice but couldn't quite believe it. 'It's me, Graham.' 'Oh Graham' she breathed and felt the tears starting to fall. There was no reason to cry but the emotion she had been bottling up for a month had to be released somehow. 'My beautiful Graham. It's so good to hear your voice' she whispered through her sobs. 'You too Kathryn. How have you been?' he said quietly. 'Not great if I'm honest' she said. 'Me neither' he said quietly.
'You don't mind me calling do you? I just wanted to chat.' She wanted to scream 'Chat away gorgeous. I'm all yours' but she simply said 'No, of course not. You can call me any time.' She was aware that he had blocked his number. She knew why. He had to protect his marriage and he couldn't risk letting her have his number. It hurt but it made sense if she put herself in his shoes.
'Kathryn, please don't read too much into me calling you. You know my circumstances but you are special to me and if I can talk to you now and again it would mean a lot to me' She winced. Of course she knew the score. He'd made that perfectly clear. Him saying it again felt like someone stamping all over her heart. But saying all that, if an occasional phone call was all she could have then she would be content with that. She'd already told him she was quite happy alone until she had met him. So this non contact telephone relationship on his terms was enough for her. Any tiny part of him was better than nothing.
