Over the next few months Graham called Kathryn three or four times a week for a chat. They talked about everyday stuff, just happy to hear the sound of each others voice. Occasionally they made reference to their feelings for one another but he would always kill the moment with an attack of common sense telling her he was a married man.
She cringed every time he did this as it was so unnecessary. He had made it very clear he wasn't interested in anything more than their special friendship. She wondered if these constant statements of his unavailability were for his benefit as well as her own. Either way they hurt. She didn't need reminding. She found her moods improved after a call from Graham but if she hadn't heard from him for a few days she would start to worry. She knew it was irrational and he wasn't hers to worry about but she still did.
He loved talking to her and his wife had passed sarcastic comments on how happy he seemed to be when he came in from work. Little did she know the reason for his good moods.
