He wandered downstairs looking at the pictures and photographs on the wall. He knew so little about Kathryn. He knew she'd been married. They had talked about that last night. Where was she from? Did she have any brothers or sisters? Were her parents alive? What would they think of him? He was old enough to be her father. Questions filled his head and he felt anxious again.
He entered the kitchen. Kathryn looked up but her face fell as she saw his expression. 'What's wrong? What is it? Are you having second thoughts?' She felt nauseous at the thought of him walking away from her again. 'No, no' he reassured her. I'm just worried about my wife and about you and about, well, everything'
She put down the pan and went to him with open arms. 'Oh Graham' she said as she hugged him tightly. 'It's going to be difficult, far more difficult for you than for me, but whatever it is between us, it's incredibly strong'. He nodded. She was right. He'd never felt as close and connected to anyone in his life. Now all they had to do was get to know each other and plan a way forward. 'Come on, sit down' she ushered him into a chair and slid a huge full English breakfast in front of him. 'Don't get used to this treatment!' she warned. 'It's only because it's our first morning together' He smiled at her and said slowly 'so I didn't tell you I was vegetarian?' 'Oh!' she gasped and went to pull the plate away from him but he grabbed her hand and as he had done once before, pulled it to his lips and kissed it. 'Kathryn, this is going to be a rocky road but I feel sure we'll get through it together' he said then let go of her hand and started tucking into his breakfast. 'But I thought you were a veg...' she started to say. He looked up her and winked. 'Kidding sweetheart!'
