I make no apologies for re-posting this. I think it's funny and I'm sure anyone who takes the time to follow the instructions will agree.
OK, setting the scene :
The Headmistress of a girls' boarding school is concerned that the girls seem tired all the time so she sends the head girl to the maths teacher to try to determine the cause. " What's the problem? " asks the maths teacher. " We don't seem to be able to sleep at night " answers the girl. "OK," says the maths teacher and she writes SLEEP NIGHT on the blackboard.(write this on a piece of paper) " I believe anything can be solved mathematically " says the maths teacher, " So let's exchange the letters for numbers ." She writes the numbers 0 - 9 under the letters (0 under S, 1 under L, 2 under E etc. - do this on your piece of paper ). " Now" she says to the girl, " pick 3 letters from right to left (NOT left to right!!) and then substitute the numbers " For example: H N L becomes 8 5 1 " Now reverse the numbers, place them underneath and subtract ." says the teacher. 8 5 1 1 5 8 ------ 6 9 3
"Next reverse them again and this time add "
6 9 3 3 9 6 ------ 1 0 8 9
" I think we're getting there " says the teacher, " How many of you girls are there? " " 40 "replies the girl "OK, then we must multiply the number by 40 ! "
1 0 8 9 4 0. x ------- 4 3 5 6 0
" Finally, convert the numbers back to letters to solve the problem ! "
