He stepped silently out of the shadows like a spectre, his face ashen in the cold moonlight, the wind lifting the tails of his suit jacket and playing with strands of his thick, chestnut hair.

"So, it's come to this," he said, the pain in his voice evident. "Please Dex, we don't have to do this, just listen..." He cut me off abruptly. "We can't change our fate Hannah, you heard the Elder. Only one of us can live. We were born for this fight."

I tried to speak but it was no use. They had convinced him there was no other way. I knew he was wrong, we were meant to be together but he just couldn't see. Somewhere deep down he knew it too, I just had to find a way to make him realize it. But how? "Younglings, prepare for initiation battle. This must be a fight to the death. Whoever survives will be able to join the Pack with high respect and honor." It seemed I had no choice, I took my position and prepared myself to fight, tears streaming silently down my face, my blond hair reflecting the pale moonlight in the still night. There was no other way. I launched myself at Dex, taking everyone by surprise.

He tried to fight back, but my pain had given me an extra surge of strength and adrenaline. It didn't last long though. Dex grabbed me and threw me down, knocking the air out of me for a second. He pinned me down and raised his arm. I looked into his darkened blue eyes, trying to find a trace of reason, but he seemed gone, everything I knew and loved dimmed by instincts. "Just end it now, so I don't have to suffer like this anymore." I begged. I couldn't do this. The last thing I saw was the blur of his fist crashing down before everything went dark.
