CHAPTER 2 - Strange Noises
It was 7:49pm by the time we arrived at mount everest. The sky was getting darker and the stars would be appearing soon. I looked at grace and frances who were getting our backpacks out. "I think we should rent a space in the Hotel over near the mountain. It's getting dark, and it would be hard to see where we are stepping if we climbed now." Frances looked at the sky. "good point." said grace. "let's head on over." Dan carried the bags and followed behind us. As we got to the door of the hotel, a man in his early 25's greeted us. "hello, my name is Chris, may I take your luggage?"Chris eyed our suitcases. "sure, thank you" said Frances. "not a problem" replied Chris. " what are the four of you doing out here do late by yourselves?" "we uh, its kinda a group thing. We like to go on hikes a lot" I said nervously. Chris looked at all of us funny. "alright"he said. "i can set you up for a night here. Just stay safe and be careful. We've been hearing a lot of ruckus the last few nights and it's scared away our customers." Chris took a look at the mountain and then led us inside. I looked at Dan. "Dan do you think he knows a little about what's going on?" I whispered. "only one way to find out, but we need Amanda's permission to include him. And she said not to tell anyone the reason we are really here." Dan eyed Chris a little. "excuse me a minute, Chris I need to make a phone call." i said as I stepped behind a wall. "not a problem" he said. "I'll come get you in a few minutes." replied Frances. She winked at me and headed up with grace and Dan. "Amanda? I have a question to ask." I whispered on the phone to amanda so no one else would hear. "yes, what's happened? Did you girls make it alright?" Amanda's voice seemed worried. "yeah we just arrived five minutes ago, and we are staying at this hotel near the mountain. The reason I called was our servant, Chris, seems to know a lot about the mountain. I want him to tell us more, but he seems to think we are up to something." I informed amanda about what he told us. "hmm well considering he doesn't really know about our mission and as long as it stays that way for now, I see no problem in you girls asking more about the noises he heard." Amanda said. "this could be very important in solving this case." "that's what I think too." I responded with excitement. "but who knows, maybe he's the bandit." "then that's why you need to find out more and I'm letting you. Just remember, don't give out ANY of our secrets." amanda whispered and then hung up. I noticed frances walking down to get me. She was wearing a excited but questioning look on her face. "so what she say? Can we get info from Chris?" I looked around then whispered in Frances's ear. "yes, but no giving out any secrets about our home base and stuff" I said. "for all we know, he could be the bad guy." we headed back to our room for the night. It was around 11am the next day when we began our climb on mount everest. We had just finished breakfast and were signing out of the hotel. Just as we were leaving we spotted Chris. "hey Chris! Can we ask you something?" I shouted. "certainly. What do you girls need?" chris was eager to answer any question. "well" said Dan, "we kinda heard a lot of banging going on last night before frances and Stephanie got back last night. Do you have any idea of where it's coming from?" Chris looked up at the mountain and pointed at a dark spot. "could've been an avalanche, that happens a lot in the mountains." Chris looked at me. "then again, we have been hearing other bangs and booms going on like I told you last night." "could you explain to us the different noises you hear every now and then? Just so we know if it's an avalanche or not?" I grinned and faked a laugh. " we are kinda new to climbing mountains." Chris smiled. "Of course. But these sounds are completely different. And avalanche is easy to tell apart. Just listen for a rumble and sticks breaking, trees snapping, it's pretty easy." chris looked at grace and then me. "The noises that I've heard the past few days however sound like fireworks going off. Every now and then you'll hear "boom!" "pshew!" "crack!" and then some rocks will fall." Chris took a glance at the top of the mountain. "is that all?" he asked nicely. "yes, thank you." grace said. As we left out the door Chris shouted back at us. "just be careful and watch out for crevasse's!" "will do!" we replied. "thanks for everything!"
