I hit the ground and wait, while above me you turn golden and slip away. The cold comes and the ground turns hard as iron. Icy fingers crawl over me and their strength threatens to strangle me before I'm started, but then just when I think I can't handle it anymore, the spring time happens. All around is an explosion of warmth and the race begins. While you stir I steal away, stretching upwards and heading to you. I can see you now, you're opening your eyes and your hands and you know I am here. Just like all the others I love you but I see a sadness in your face. You know that many of us won't make it. I know from your sad look I will be one of those that dies. It's true. I see it now. The shadows grow darker as around me my sisters and my brothers grow fat and thick and lock me under them. Caged in the shadows I can only wonder. Will you miss me when I'm gone? It's a shame I couldn't be stronger. As the summer wanes and autumn comes again, I breath my last. Barely a year old, a little twig poking out of the soil. Too many acorns and not enough forest. There wasn't space. Goodbye mother.
