I blink, and I'm awake, My senses coming to, Smoke fills my lungs, I check the house There's naught that I can do
I wake my mother and father Stir my sister and brother Tell them there's a fire, somewhere! Not our house but another,
My father, the brave man he is, Shoots up and runs downstairs We're all in our pyjamas Too late, nobody cares
Instructed to stay in our rooms By my siblings accompany me I draw back the curtains And choke on what I see
The warble of a siren Answers the call of flames Next door is devoured by fire Enough smoke to drive someone insane
My father leaps into the ruins To try to find our neighbour. He emerges, after slight too long; He can no longer save her.
