Food is running out, Hansels eaten almost every edible thing in my house. I should probably prepare him more fattening foods, but the energy had been sucked out of me when I was getting rid of that pest. Gretel. Oh how annoying she was, she might be alive still, but it's not very likely; she's been gone for nearly a day. In the cold, darkness, her corpse will wait.
"I've finished." Hansel says through his last mouthful of buttery chicken, mashed potatoes, and corn.
"Do you need more?" I ask him sweetly.
"I can go to sleep?"
"No! Um, I mean I have more food" I cross my fingers and beg nothingness that he's too stupid to catch that.
"Okay, I'm still pretty hungry" He says. I nod at him and walk into the warm, cozy, dim lighted kitchen, and immediately I feel nauseas.
What am I going to feed that boy? There isn't anything left except what's in the garden, but that would take so much time, so much patience, and so much energy. There might still be some of the food I gave Gretel on her first night left in the hay. I race to the floor boards and yank the up, they creek slightly but it's not too loud. In a rush I jump feet first into the 2x2 foot hole, barely grasping the ladder. Then I see her, laying limp in the hay. So I was right, she only made it that one night down her. A smile creeps onto my lips. For a moment I'm so buried in the pleasure of having her rid from my life forever that I forget completely why I even came down here in the first place. It's nearly pitch black down here with the exception of my candle light. After an eternity of remembering the need to get food for Hansel nags at my mind. I walk proudly over to Gretel, her food should be in her pockets. It's not.
