Chapter 8
"Here" I say and drop the leaves on Cap's lap, "No need to pick the whole forest" she says and chucks them in the pot. "Thanks" Vivos says and snatches the spoon off Cap and stirs in the leaves, "Oi" Cap snaps and leads forward to get the spoon back. It's best if I leave them alone. "Can I carry the leaves you have picked?" I ask Fortis, "No need. I can carry them easily with no help" he answers. I need to find something to occupy my thoughts that are now hunger and The Caeruleus so I decide to climb the tree. As I stood on the roots trying to find I foot rest or hole to help me up... "Don't climb the tree darling" Fortis says not making any eye contact. He can read minds and that makes him a freaky, creepy boyfriend that no one other than me would want. "I'm bored" I shout at him, "Entertain yourself then sweetie" he replies still not making eye contact. I let out a loud sigh and decide to keep Fortis in a mood that doesn't mean him running off. Sleeping. I'm a genius and the idea of sleeping is pure genius. I sit down by the roots of the tree and finally get my extra five minutes, then ten, then fifteen. How lucky am I. "You can't sleep" Fortis says giving me a look, "Otherwise you won't sleep when we are asleep". "I'd sleep all day if I wasn't here" I snap at him, "Okay darling, whatever you say" he says and I can see him rolling his eyes as he turns back around. The joy of sleep. It reminds me of part of that song 'Come Tomorrow' Whispering your safe, Whispering your warm, Whispering your shielded. I will always love that lullaby. I recited the song quite a few times until could sing no more. For example, falling asleep.
I was woken by the smell of leaves cooking over an open flame. Yum leaf stew. For some reason I hoped that Vivos had cooked it because he is an excellent chef. He cooked on my birthday. The cranberry trifle, the raspberry tart and the victoria sponge cake. We were well untruly spoilt by his handmade delicacies. "Wake her Cap" I can hear Vivos saying to Captionem. This is a warning for what was going to happen next. She'll unleash the stench that comes from an item as friendly as a sock but can turn even the most sane men to utterly insane mad things. I scream with the thought of the foul reek. This causes Cap to jump. "You ok" Fortis asks and walks over and crouches in front of me. "Want me to help you up?" he asks, "Obviously. I've had these back pains for the last few months and you are still asking me of I want help to stand up. The answer will always be yes" I say and he helps me up. "Here" Vivos says and passes me a bowl of leaf stew, "Thanks" I say staring at the pale slop in the bowl, "Something wrong with it?" Cap asks and flutters her eyelashes for good measure, "No" I lie and sit down next to her and eat it up slowly hoping that it hasn't got anything like moss, soil or bark in it. I have nothing against moss, soil and bark, I just don't want it in my stew.
When I finished the stew I lay down on the ground feeling fully satisfied, "Does anyone know what time it is?" I ask them, "Technically we just ate tea cos it's like five o'clock now" Vivos replies, "Where did all the time go? It clearly was lunch before now it's tea" I ask him like he could give a me straight explanation. "It was roughly three when we started to make lunch. I takes time to collect leaves and stew it all up in a pot" he says and I shoot him a look that clearly screams 'time nerd' without it being said. Vivos rolls his eyes, a clear way of saying someone 'I don't give a shit'. "Creepy" Cap says covering mine and Vivos' eyes, "What are you doing?" Fortis asks Cap. He's finally lifted his head up from staring at the flipping stew and finally acknowledged us again. "They were staring at each other" she says, "Uncover them" he says, "Yeah Cap, uncover us" Vivos and I say, "No more glances, stares, gazes, glares, winking and blinking. No showing emotion or eye contact at all" she says and uncovers our eyes. "How can we not blink?" Vivos asks her, "Try" she says and turns around and there was an awkward silence that shut up even the most chattery like Cap.
"What should we do now?" Fortis asks us, "Truth or Dare" Cap says staring eagerly, "No" Vivos snaps, "Hide and seek" I suggest, "Yeah" Fortis says giving Cap a look of triumph. "I'll be on" Cap says and counts to ten. I hid in the shrubbery, Vivos in a tree and Fortis stood behind it. Cap opened her eyes and yelled "I can see you all" and it was true, Vivos was in a fork were anyone could see his legs, Fortis wasn't hidden properly and I really didn't try hard, when I mentioned I hid in the shrubbery, it really was just me standing behind a bush. "Parva, are you just not bothered or can't crouch behind a shrub?" Cap asks me, "Both" I reply, "Ok" she says and starts laughing at Vivos' legs that were hanging out the tree and his lame excuses on why his legs don't fit. "What time?" I ask Vivos because I just couldn't be bothered to look up at the sky, "Sixish" he replies, "Hey, 'Sixish' isn't a word, but hey ho, I get the picture" I say and everyone gives me a weird look. "I'm shattered" I yawn, "I'm not" Fortis says, "I'll be on guard", "Thanks" Cap says as we pack our bags up ready to move in the morning. Cap sat in the tree, Vivos and I were sat on the damp earth.
The slumber we had just drifted into was unknown to us four but I could feel like it could be the last time I sleep in a forest for a long time. So long it feels like it could last infinity.
