Chapter 1:
'Dear Diary, I am starting a new year at school today, my parents died a few months ago in a car accident that almost killed me and I really don't want to go to school but I will because I know Aunt Jenna won't cope with both me and Jeremy off school. I just have to put on a brave face and act like everything is normal....But deep down I know it isn't' I sigh and snap my diary shut, I slide it under my matress, grab my bag off the floor and I walk out of my bedroom shutting the door behind me. As I'm walking down the stairs I see pictures of my parents, tears come to my eyes but I quickly wipe them away as I walk into the kitchen where my Aunt Jenna and my 16 year old brother Jeremy are having breakfast. "Morning Elena" Jenna said, looking up from the newspaper she was reading. I go over to give her a kiss "Morning" I reply. Then I move round the table "Morning Jer" and give my little brother a hug. "Morning Elena" he says with his mouth full of food. Jenna was my mum's sister and like everyone she was devastated when she heard about her sister and brother-in-law, but she agreed to be our guardian. As I open the front door Jenna says "Elena, you need to eat something" I sigh, we have this conversation every morning. "I'll get something on the way to school" and I close the door before she can reply.
Lake High School is a 10 minute walk from my house. As I walk along the road I think about what I'm going to say to my friends when they ask me how I am and what I'm going to tell my boyfriend Matt when he asks me because he can always tell when I'm lying. I will visit my parents grave later I think as I walk past Mystic Falls Cemetery.
When I get to school I go straight to my locker. As I walk down the corrider every head turns in my direction, some of the boys whistle but I just ingore them. Some people say I'm the luckiest girl in the world, all the girls want to be like me and all the boys ask me on dates. Of course they were all really upset when I turned them down and started going out with Matt. I get to my locker 5 minutes before the bell is due to ring for my first period, I look at my schedule - I have History in room 3. I shut my locker and make my way to room 3. I'm just about to go into the classroom when the door opens and out steps Mrs Head. Mrs Head is Jeremy's tutor and the Deputy Principal. "Morning Miss Gilbert, I've just recieved the letter your Aunt sent me saying what happened to your mum and dad. I have told the teachers and they understand. Is Jeremy in today?" she says giving me a concerned look. I finally find my voice "No, He wanted to stay at home and Jenna thought it was a good idea" "yes It is a good idea, you both have had a terrible shock, I'm sorry" and with that she walks off down the corridor just as the bell rings.
When I push open the door to room 3 I'm attacked by 3 people. "ELENA!" They hug me so hard I nearly fall over! They untangle themselves and that is when i get a proper look at my three best friends: Bossy Caroline with blue eyes and blond hair - I have known her since kindergarten. Smart, cool Meredith with brown eyes and black hair. Bubbly little Bonnie with blue eyes and red curly hair. They start asking me loads of questions but I'm not really listening, I'm looking round the room and at my classmates. On the front row of tables there are some girls I don't talk to that much: Hannah, Natalie, Sophie, Beth, Maddy and her sister Emily. Caroline, Meredith, Bonnie and I are on the middle row with two really nice girls: Francis and Tina. Behind us are the boys: Tyler and his best friend Will, Jason, George, my boyfriend Matt and a new guy i don't recognise.
"Who is the new guy?" I whisper to Caroline as we sit down, "I don't know, you'll have to ask Matt" and she winks. We stop talking then because Mr Tanner walks into the room and starts boring us with World War 2 stuff! The new guy is good at history and answers nearly all the questions. Finally the bell rings and I rush off to Study Period knowing I'll be able to talk to Matt without the others eavesdropping!
I'm getting out my English book when Matt arrives. After introducing the new guy to the teacher he comes and sits next to me. "Hey Elena, How are you doing? Care told me about what happened and I'm so sorry" Care is Caroline's nickname. "I'm fine thanks, I'm so sorry I didn't call you - I was so upset and everytime I spoke to someone I burst into tears" I look into his puppy dog blue eyes. "It's fine Elena. I'm just glad your ok" We hug and the new guy clears his throat, I had completely forgotten that he was there and it looked like Matt had too. "Elena, this the new guy Stefan Salvatore" Matt said. "Stefan, this is Elena Gilbert - the girl I was telling you about." As Stefan leaned across to say "Hi" I almost faint! His body was muscle, he has weavy golden brown hair with light green eyes. We talked for abit until we got reminded by Miss Hill that this is a Study Period not a Chat Period. The bell rings for break and I make way to my locker to put my books away before meeting Care, Bonnie and Meredith outside.
As I walk to where my friends are sitting I can't stop thinking about Stefan Salvatore, he is handsome, georgous and hot. Bonnie knows something is up before a even sit down. "you've got the smile, Spill Elena!" she says as I smile even more. I lean into the group "I've just met the new guy, his name is Stefan Salvatore amd he is from Italy, his favourite colour is blue and his birthday is the 23rd July. He lives at the Boarding House - the one thats in the middle of town and he is joining the rugby team." Once I had finished Caroline said "You got all that information in Study Period?" I nodded. "wow" said Bonnie. I smilied and Meredith gave a shout "I know that smile Elena Gilbert, your up to something I can tell." "Elena, you already have Matt" said Caroline with a sigh. "Of course she does, but she wants Stefan. Don't you Elena?" Meredith was always the smarter one out of all of us. I nod and I notice Caroline's eyes narrow. Since when did getting the best boyfriend start being a competion?
After break I have English and Geography and then its lunch. I meet Bonnie, Meredith, Care, Francis and Tina in the Cafetiria and we sit together to eat - Francis and Tina want to hear all the gossip about Stefan. When we have finish lunch we go to the field to watch Matt, Stefan, Tyler, Will, George and Jason at rugby practise. Caroline gives me looks everytime I look at what Stefan is doing or if I miss seeing Matt score a goal. The bell then rings and we go to room 15 for Maths. I sit next to Matt and Caroline, When I ask Matt for help I see Stefan looking at me but he quickly turns away when he knows I'm looking. He doesn't try to make any other eye connection with me for the rest of the day. The final bell rings and I hurry out of school.
