High

She used to destroy those little packages before they were even opened.
Shed dig through her mother's purse,
And throw them out with a curse

I guess one day she got curious.
What was in the box seemed mysterious.
And at that age she was beginning to doubt
Everything that her elders had told her about.

So she opened up the new, white package in her mom's purse
But upon seeing its lethal contents,
She tossed it once again behind her back
And left it in the dirt.

A few years later, she was curled in the corner of her room
Her face in her hands as she was overwhelmed with despair
Then her phone lit up with an offer,
A promise to make her pain disappear- it seemed wonderful.

The next year, she spent a lot of time on trampolines,
She bounced higher and higher with each gift from the white box,
Her new confident.

And just as the dawn was about to break, she would scurry home,
Back to face the many demons that hid beneath the floorboards.

Too late her parents smelled it off her skin,
They accused her of all sorts of sins
Rehabilitation became their only hope for her.

And the trampolines went cold
But the dealers stayed warm
And her heart became stone
So she fell to the floor
And her parents came in too late.
