"They're totally checking us out," Breezy whispered, leaning over the table seductively. She looked over at the two guys sitting in the booth and winked at them. I simply sat perplexed, drinking coffee. "So Steph's birthday party was a bust," Breezy sighed as she sat back in her seat. She glanced at the guys and tossed her long caramel colored hair over her shoulder. "I'm seriously about to go over there." I looked at the guys to see them openly ogling us. It was kind of creepy. "So which one did you sleep with?" I asked tiredly. "The blonde one. He's 22. His sexy, dark and mysterious friend, I have never seen before," she admitted. She looked at her hands splayed out on the table and said,"Boy, I need a manicure." I turned away from the guys and looked out the window, which was pointless because it was too dark to see anything. I still couldn't completely process how slutty my best friend is. All this time, and I really had no idea. I'm so stupid. "Ok I'm going to go over there," she said annoyed. I watched her storm up to the older guys a few feet away, and although I couldn't hear anything that she said, she was moving her hands around a lot, obviously annoyed with them. The guys looked a little appalled but they continued to flash her flirty smiles and winks, begging her to sit down with them. When I thought she was going to walk away, she sat down. And she motioned for me to come over and do the same. "No," I mouthed to her. I turned to the window so I wouldn't have to look at her begging, sad face. "Can I sit here?" I turned around and I was facing the blonde's friend with the dark curls. He was tall and lean and pale, with big brown eyes covered by his locks. "Uhhh..." I said, baffled by his attractiveness. He laughed a little and then sat across from me in the booth. I looked to Breezy who gave me a thumbs up before proceeding to talk to the blonde guy. "I'm Chris," he offered. He held out his hand and I timidly shook it and said, "Melanie." "So..." he said,"Come here often?" "No." I looked at my lap to avoid his gaze. No way was I going go anywhere or do anything with him. And I certainly didn't want to give him the wrong idea. "You look nice," he commented, trying a different angle to make conversation. "Thanks," I replied. I adjusted my sparkly black tshirt, feeling suddenly self conscious. "I get the impression that you don't like me," he stated. "I don't dislike YOU," I corrected. I looked over to Breezy and he said,"Frenemies?" I started laughing uncontrollably and between my gasps I choked out,"Did you really just say that?" He was looking at me with an amused expression. "Yeah. Isn't that what it's called?" "Sure, but I don't think anyone has ever admitted to having a frenemy. It's like, an unspoken thing," I responded, wiping away my tears. "Now that's something they should teach you in college," he said. "You're in college?" "Yeah, the community one right here. Where do you go?" he pulled both of his hands onto the table and folded them. "I don't go to college." "I know. What school do you go to?" "Oh, you know...the one around here," I said vaguely. I didn't want him to stalk me. "Ah, I know the one," he joked, nodding his head vigorously and making more of his curls fall into his eyes. He brushed them away with his hand. Then a phone went off. "Sorry, that's me," he apologized. He pulled out his phone and put it to his ear. "Hey. Yeah I'm still at the diner. I can't leave right now I'm waiting on Drew. Yeah he's talking to a girl. Sure, she's attractive. I'm not saying that, c'mon don't start with this," Chris begged as he fiddled with the napkins in the dispenser. "So what if I said I would...well fuck you! You deserved it! Yes, I still love you. Okay, bye." He slipped the phone back into his pocket and looked up at me, registering my befuddled expression. "Girlfriend," he explained. "Oh." "But we're not dating. She's my female friend," he went on. "At least I don't think we're dating. She makes it so confusing sometimes." "Yeahhh..." I hesitated, not knowing what to say to that. What's with people and complex non-relationships? It seems as though everyone was in one. Chris laughed at my apparently humorous expression. "Well I need to get going. Nice meeting you, Melanie." He got up and walked toward the blonde named "Drew," who was intimately chatting with Breezy, their heads bent close together. At Chris's signal, Drew kissed Breezy on the cheek and then stalked off with Chris. Breezy watched them go and then skipped over to the booth that I was sitting in. "I need a favor," she said, twisting a lock nervously.
