We are on the very verge of the most dubious distinction; So clever and productive, we engineer our own extinction.

Certainly, such catastrophic die offs have happened several times When one thing or another has conspired to disrupt our climes.

We are not the only living things to create such mass demise. Oxygen was lethal when life first learned to photosynthesize.

But in the past these grim events ground on for many thousand years. It's truly startling right now, the rate that species disappear.

The polar caps are goners now, they're on a hopeless downward slide, And as the oceans warm and sour, the farmlands just keep getting fried.

Of course, the Earth will soon recover, in a million years or so. Will any humans be there to see it? That we do not know.

So look into your child's eyes that's full of trust and confidence And carefully explain the mess we've left for their inheritance.
