Once upon a time, there lived a young girl named Aerie. Aerie was not a normal little girl, most little girls at the age of Aerie were expected to start prep school, but Aerie expected something a lot more exiting.
Aerie was a Synth. Synths were in charge of all the trees in King Olin's land. The human children and parents had never heard of King Olin, you see King Olin was a toad. Yes a toad. It sounds silly but he wasn't always a toad, he had been cursed by an evil wizard named Dolph. Dolph was one of the most feared wizards in all of Kalgoria. If you ever ran into this wizard's land, you would very likely never return.
It was Aerie's eighth birthday, the day she would get her first tree! Synth's would get five trees in their life. One when they were eight, another when they were twelve and three more when they were fourteen, eighteen and twenty. Then they would guard their trees until they gave them over to their children.
Aerie wasn't told what tree she would receive first, but she knew it would either be an apple tree, a pine, the baby oak or the birch by the third district. Her mother was a Nymph, her father had discovered her inside his Pine, his fourth tree. They decided when Aerie was a baby that it was best if she took on the duties as a Synth rather than a Nymph, it would be much safer. There was one tree she almost was certain her father wouldn't give up till he had too, that was the old willow. This was the only willow in Kalgoria. It was situated by the fifteenth district, the last district. Dolph's layer laid only a mile or so away from it, and Aerie's father knew well that the pond it stood over was the evil wizards main water source.
Aerie was going out to collect mother some herbs when she heard someone calling, it was a low clear voice. She ran over to the apple tree near her home, only to find a boy, he was older than her, maybe eleven or twelve. He had been climbing the tree trying to reach the nicest apples at the top. Whoever the guard of this tree was, he, or she, wasn't stupid. He was caught in a trap, it was only a simple net trap, but it would be hell to get out of. Aerie cut him loose and told him to stay away from this part of the district. He nodded naively and ran back the way he came.
When Aerie returned home, she found nothing but her mother's cooking on the table. She called several times and got nothing in return. They were gone.
