A boy and his B.U.D. That's me and him "Biometric Universal Device" On the edge of boredom The brink of night Perhaps the only ones Still living in this wide, quiet sky.
He plays me favorite music Lets me win at chess Makes holograms of TV shows And teaches me to milk cows In these dry, milky corridors. Something I will never do.
He checks the temperature Feeds me, even vaccinates. His voice calls can span galaxies But there's no-one who can hear. My B.U.D. phones me sometimes When I get lonesome-like, And pretends to be Dave.
He shows me scenes from long ago Digitally enhanced life Even better than human sight. I reach to touch the trees To fill my lungs On ocean-laundered air But its just light and energy. I do not laugh When these photons tickle.
Strange lonely nightmares Break the surface some nights. He sings for me Off-key, electronically 'twinkle twinkle' B.U.D. Sings As I sit in the dark dome Where the garden's growing wild. I swing my legs, Look out at stars looking back.
I ask him what he will do When I am dead. B.U.D. is silent but Vibrates I wondered if eternity alone Scares him too.
