A trusted brother And truest of men Maybe one day We will laugh again. ______________

You said: 'Coming?' I wasn't sure. The shore Was sticky with July. Night water was A constant draw For you. I never Fathomed why.

It's like the world Was gone out there As though devoured By kraken's jaw; But you were man - You didn't care. You flung your clothes Off at the shore

Streak of sinew, flash of arse A shriek and laughter - 'F***ing cold!' I stripped and made to follow after. You took the piss, urged and cajoled.

As a kid you swam in trials A team of schooling, fooling fish You swam the oceans - miles and miles To sculpt the waves your only wish.

I often picture you that night Far from shallows in the black The shadowed depths so vast beneath The stars impassive at your back

Did titanic monsters glide Beneath you in the endless ink Were leaden legs your Waterloo Or did you calmly choose to sink?

I called you, tiny in night mists A numbing waist up to the swell Was that you calling in the dark I strained, replied, but could not tell.

Many tried to find you since But human seekers never will. You swam away, so far ahead. In my mind you're swimming still
