30 October 2012

Out by the lighthouse In the heat and spray I saw the hurricane come this way I knew I should run But my legs became rock And my pulse was quickened An urgent clock

On the edge of Montok (And maybe life) The blue sky and storm Were a keen-edged knife I presented my smallness To the sky's growing powers And the lightning seeds bloomed From the cloud-petalled flowers.

I went there to think But flirted with chance Trading raindrops for seconds I saw the floods dance Like I'm caught in a fury When I'm not to blame, For an unnoticed moment I left my shape in the rain.

I saw its raw majesty! Now perishing's my duty... What a gift that, in dying, I saw Earth's cruel beauty!
