As the door flung open a pair if feet in black leathery shoes walked in. They belonged to the nun I saw walking down the corridor a few moments before. The nun sighed and looked under the bed like she knew where I was . When I thought about it that would be the first place I'd look. Her beady eyes bored into me and made me feel extremely uncomfortable. But instead of grabbing me by the hair and dragging me from under the bed and barking at me, she smiled instead. She held out her hand, as if I was going to take it. I moved back and climbed out the side of the bed and stood against the wall. I looked at her smile turn into a look of pity. She sat on the bed and tapped her hand on it indicating that i should sit next to her. I leaned against the wall hoping by some miracle I would go straight through it. The only sounds were her breathing loudly and my heart beating in my chest.

I was sure if she wanted me dead she would have done it by now, or did she want to torture me for information on my father that despised of the leader of the world, Hitler. Suddenly fear hit me like a cold hand at these thoughts. But he was probably dead.

'sit down it's ok' the nun said in English! I had made it to England a grin slapped of my face and then was replaced with a look of half content and half still really worried. My English was good and I knew it, it was one of the only lessons I payed attention to at school. But school closed because of the war and I didn't like to think of it. War meant death of someone you knew whether you liked it or not. I hate hitler just like my dad. My mum on the other hand was just scared and my brother never talked about it to me. He was 17, four years older than me. But I was turning 14 soon, mum always said we grew up so fast, too fast in fact. Thinking of my family made tears spring into my eyes so I pushed them back along with the thoughts of them. The present mattered.

'Do you understand English?'she said with a look of desperation. I had to cooperate or I would get nowhere.

'I understand English' I said but before I could stop my self it all blurted out. I was well known for asking questions once I started talking and apparently my eyes dart around the place. My dad told me my eyes were so dangerous especially with Nazi's patrolling the streets.

'where am I? Who are you? What happen...' she cut me off and held her finger to her lips. How dare she hush me. My dad also said that I had a very dangerous temper. I ran out school a couple of times when I broke someones nose for speaking about my fathers disagreement with the Nazi regime. I also remember stamping on a teachers foot and storming out of the class last year for saying how wonderful and powerful hitler was and anyone who disagreed with him was an idiot( my dad).

I decided to stay silent for the time being but once I knew where I was I would decide what would happen then.

'you are in England and you are in an orphanage where you will be safe. I am sister Margret. You were on a boat with some of our allied soldiers that where escaping from a prisoner of war camp. You passed out and were brought here where you will be safe.'she repeated. It took a long silent minute for me to digest all of this information. What would happen now?

'it is nearly lunch time so you must be hungry. You can meet the others. I would advise you stay away from Charlie though. He's a little...'she hesitated looking for the right words' tough on people, typical boy and especially new comers.' she smiled and told me to follow her. I wasn't aware of my hunger because of all the fear. We went through a few narrow corridors and then she pushed a big wooden door. It was full of children all talking with bowls of potatoes and carrots and a green paste.

'Every one this is Leni, she is new and want you all to treat her with respect and be nice, she has been through a lot!' her voice boomed through the eating hall, then everyone got back to their conversations.' you collect your food from there where the trays are and then sit next to someone. I think you should sit next to Sarah, she's nice'. I collected my food and looked around bewildered about who Sarah was.'silly me you don't know her, she is over there'. She pointed to a dark haired girl, quite thin and had already noticed me, she waved her hands smiling. I made my way down to her and sat next to her. There were a few other girls but I didn't take notice of them.

' hi I'm Sarah and I guess your Leni, nice to meet you. We are your room mates. We've been waiting for you but you've been sleeping for 2 days! Any way welcome' she shook my good hand enthusiastically. Well this was my new life. Should I escape? I'll settle down for a bit first I think.
