We sailed across in our little boats Each with a doorframe to keep us afloat And our jackets were lashed To our bodies for masts Play on, we go on

White horses leapt and grabbed at our feet Dragging us downwards to our makers meet And the mermaids and mermen Whispered into our ears Play on, we go on

With lips tight shut and faces blue, blood Had run to a place where no wave could touch Our hearts scuppered short Of golden new shores Play on, we go on

Red in our hearts and harsh in our throats We cried to each other, dear Christ stay afloat Make for the beach Just off Deadman's reach Don't drown - we play on, we go on

Making the shore we collapsed, full spent Our heads and legs aching, flesh torn, muscles rent We wept for relief though no one could see We were one less playing on

The captain came forth and ordered us all Further upland away from the surf and when we arrived With dread then I spied Little Jim in the waves

We sailed across in our little boats Each with a doorframe to keep us afloat And though we were saved One went to his grave We left shall not stop We'll play on, we'll go on

Blackwater down to the sea Blackwater down to the sea In a thousand years That's where you'll be Blackwater beneath a dark Deep, cold blue sea
