I sat on the sand, my knees pulled to my chest, and watched the waves crawl forward and back with ease. The rain was coming down lightly, making a rippled effect upon the surface. The moon, just a dim light in the sky, looked like a thin C. Now and again a light would blind me. The lighthouse. It was beautiful during the day but at night? At night it was something else. It was spectacular.
It sat there by the cliffs, open and inviting, and it called out to the boats. It guided them home, shining its blindingly bright light across the unnaturally calm water.
Guide him home to us, I wanted to tell the lighthouse, but I knew that was too much to ask for. He would come home on his own accord. He was out there somewhere, on his way back to us. On his way.
"Come back home, Daddy" I whispered, my words fading away, as the sirens sounded in my mind.
Another boat in the horizon. Another boat bringing back loved ones lost at sea. Another boat following the light of the lighthouse. Another boat to me. Another boat which wasn't my daddy's.
