More on the way! I'm going Texas crazy tonight. It's a Texas Girl Marathon ;)
I drove my matte black Range Rover precariously down the small, country lane, waiting for some sort of bump or dip in the road. I glanced over at my phone, checking I had the address right. The notes page I had input Drew's house name and number on glowed up at me brightly, almost mockingly. It read:
Spring Valley House,
Fourth Acre Road,
Apple Springs.
So simple, yet so damn hard to find. I sighed, giving up and dialling Drew's number - illegal I know, I was driving, but I was driving God knows where, so if I have to drive illegally, let's just make sure I have a destination.
"Hello?" Drew's sweet, Southern accent greeted me, making my smile grow wider, my heart pump faster and my adrenaline rush quicker. Maybe I should say hi back. Duh?
"Oh hey. I'm lost"
"Haha, typical Bieber"
"Don't judge. Atlanta is so much... bigger"
"Ok that makes no sense. If the place is bigger, it should be easier to get lost, not the other way around" she giggled. Was I delirious today or something? Seriously, my brain must have taken a holiday to lala land.
"Uh, right, anyway. Help me. Please" I chuckled pathetically.
"What road are you on?"
"You can't class this as a road. It looks like a desert"
"Get used to it Bieber. Now, what road are you on?" she asked again, and it sounded like she was shuffling around and speaking to someone else. I ignored it, and glanced out my window, looking for anything that would identify my location. A rusty sign stood loosely on the corner of the track, and I squinted to see that it read-
"Strong Acres. What the fuck is it with you Texas people and your Acres and Springs?" I laughed.
"Well, it's pretty much all we have" she giggled in reply "Ok you're not that lost. Keep driving and take the first right".
I did as she said, speeding up as I drove down the road. BUMP. "Fuck!" I had been looking out for a dip, and it got me. It got me good. "Did you just go through the pothole?" she sounded as if she was holding back a laugh, and I gave her a glare, even though she couldn't see it. "No. I just... dropped my phone" I denied. "On what?". "My.... Um... never mind". Drew burst out laughing, and took deep breaths to calm herself down for the next instruction "One more right and you're there".
I did as she said, and turned the next right. It opened out onto the biggest, widest, most open space I had seen so far in Texas (beside the fields).
It was a massive ranch. With stables and barns and fields and a farm house. "Holy crap" I breathed as I clambered out of my car after switching off the engine and pocketing the keys. I hung up without another word, unable to muster enough air to speak. This place truly was amazing.
The barns were tall and wooden, filled with over a hundred cows, noisy and loud. There were about 10 Stables, all occupied by beautiful horses, every single one a different breed to the other. The house was short, only one floor, with a large patio that stretched the length of the house. Everything was wooden. It looked authentic and antique, but to Drew and her family, and all the other people in town, I bet this was considered fairly normal.
One stable door was open. Drew stepped out, looking beautiful as ever if I might add. She wore a plain loose cream coloured tee that was a sort of see-through fabric, so you could sort of see her black lace bra (I tried to avert my gaze like a gentleman, but it was highly impossible) as well as ripped grey jeans and grey trainers. So simple, yet so sexy. I bet I've said that before. Or thought it. There are various other things I've thought too, but I'm too polite to write it. Plus, if my Mom knew... she'd disown me. Jokes ;).
Drew ran up to me, and jumped into my arms in a welcoming hug. Yeah, she wants me ;).
"Hey. Welcome to Spring Valley Stables" she giggled when I put her down, running her hand through her long, soft red hair. "Oh my god, Drew. You never told me you live at a place like this! It's amazing!" I exclaimed, making her smile and blush at the compliment of her home. "Come on, I'm almost done" she said, gesturing for me to follow her. I did as she said, and followed her into the stable with the open door.
Now, if I'm honest, I had never really seen a horse up close. Don't judge. I'd travelled the world, sung at Madison Square Garden, met the President of the United States, but I'd never been three feet away from a horse. No, I'm not weird, just Canadian... and famous. Ok, I'm getting off the point here.
In front of me stood the most beautiful creature I had ever seen. "This is Dallas, she's my horse" Drew smiled, wrapping her arms around the mare's neck.
Dallas was almost as beautiful as Drew. She had a long grey mane, ragged and unruly, and the same coloured coat. The colour of her legs darkened the further down you looked, until the smooth, silky coat became black at her hooves. She was quite a short, muscular horse, body thick and tough. I loved how her coat and mane were messily flecked with light and dark brown, exhibiting her dark black eyes. The thing that struck me most was those eyes, not the colour and not the size, just the way you could stare into them and get lost. Almost like the way you could with Drew's. Except, Drew's eyes were.... Fuck, there I go again, lost in her eyes. I couldn't win, everyone round here had nice eyes.
Drew picked up a small, fibrous brush from the box on the floor, and began to run it along the warm-blooded creature's back. "Y'all just gon' stand there or are you gonna help?" Drew turned to me and giggled, making my heart pound so loud I swear she could hear it. She looked so short and petite alongside the tall muscular horse. She looked fragile and empty, so much so that I wanted to go over and wrap my arms around her small body and just hold her tight to my chest and keep her safe. But I didn't. I just walked over, grabbed a brush and stood alongside Drew, copying her gentle, smoothing action. "She's beautiful, isn't she?" Drew looked mesmerised as she looked over at Dallas' calm, collected face as she stood and let us groom her, eyes flickering shut as she fell asleep to the smooth feeling of the brush running along her body. Drew looked at Dallas while she spoke, but I looked at Drew "Yea... she is". I wasn't talking about the horse - even though Dallas was very happiness-inducing - I was talking about Drew. Gorgeous, Southern, breath-takingly beautiful Drew. She was so pretty, it hurt.
She looked back at me, and I shook myself out of the loving stare I had been giving her, some of me hoping she wouldn't notice, but some of me hoping she would. She didn't. She just brushed away the final flecks of mud from Dallas' shoulders, and dropped the brush into the bucket. "You wanna go watch a movie or something?" she smiled, giving Dallas a round-the-neck hug. The horse nuzzled her head into Drew's shoulder, rubbing on it forcefully. Drew just giggled and held her ground, rubbing Dallas' head with her knuckles to get rid of the itch that was clearly bothering her. "Yeah, sure. I wanna see your house" I ran my hand along Dallas' back, feeling the smooth, silkiness of her coat beneath my fingers. "Come on then" she looked excited and ready, "See you later baby" she kissed the horse's head, before leaving the stable. I followed and she bolted the door.
My heart skipped a beat as she took my hand to lead me to the house. I silently begged her to walk slowly, knowing that as soon as we reached the house, she'd let go of my hand, swiftly warming in hers. I tried to control my breathing and make myself seem relatively normal as she clutched onto my fingers, taking me up the steps and to the rickety front door. "Do you ever get robberies, I mean, this door isn't even chipmunk proof Tex" I chuckled, gesturing to the thin wooden slate Drew called a "Door". "We do get robberies. But not in the house. People steal horses round here" she shrugged. "Fascinating" I said sarcastically as she dragged me inside.
It looked like something out of a old Western movie. Long brown leather sofa, cow print rug, wooden floorboards, fireplace, plus a flat screen TV. The fact that it didn't look out of place surprised me. The wooden boarded walls were covered in pictures of horses, cows, anything with four legs, and Drew. Mainly Drew. And two other people that I assumed to be her Grandparents.
"Mamaw, I'm back. And I brought a friend" Drew called, before entering through a doorway - with no door, If I might add. I followed, and was immediately hit with the smell of food. Good food. Pie to be exact.
A woman that looked around sixty stood at a large oven, heat billowing out in clouds. She had short, cropped hair, dark brown, but turning grey with age, eyes the same cloudy grey as Drew's.
She gave a large smile when she saw her Granddaughter. "Drew! Oh, this must be Justin. I've heard all about you sweetie. Want some pie?" she babbled excitedly, and I immediately knew I liked this woman. Drew blushed, "No Mamaw, we don't want any pie" she giggled, leaning against the wooden breakfast bar. "Speak for yourself Texas" I chuckled, taking a seat as the kind lady cut me a slice of pie. "Typical Bieber" Drew sighed, taking a seat next to me at the tall bar.
I looked around at the kitchen. It was cosy and quaint, with small, boxy windows and flower-patterned curtains. Counter-tops lined half the small room, with the breakfast island adjoining onto the wall, right beside the entrance. I turned to my right, where the doorway was, and noticed a large empty window, but with no glass, just uh... air? Sorry, I don't know how to describe these things. Yeah but anyway it was a large gap and let you see through into the living room so you could watch the TV whilst you ate. My kind of people.
"So, you're from Atlanta, Justin. What's it like there?" Drew's Grandmother asked as she placed the rest of the pie in the middle of the table on a plate. You could tell where Drew got her accent. Everyone around here had it, but Drew's... oh it was something else. Every little thing she said was like listening to an angel singing. Not over-exaggerating.
I explained to the two Southerners about the busy, New York life, realising I hadn't told Drew much about it either. They listened intently, seeming intrigued and shocked by the way we lived. "So, you don't have stables or anything?" Drew asked, finding it hard to believe. "Nope. Just high-rise buildings and sky-scrapers. No stables" I shrugged. The two looked sympathetic and pitying. Drew shook her head and smiled smugly "Y'all don't know what you're missin'.... So how do you get around without horses?".
"Uh, by car".
"What's a car?".
What? Huh? "Oh she's just messin' with ya Justin" Mamaw laughed, leaning across the table and playfully nudging her granddaughter in the arm. Drew giggled with her family member and gave me a mischievous, sexy smile.
Breathe Justin, breathe. It's ok. Your heart might just restart if you don't look at that amazingly sexy smile again. I glanced, and regretted it. Heart... failing. Lungs.... restricted. And, ahhh. That was a close one. "Don't do that to me Drew, my heart stopped for a moment there" I breathed, placing my hand over my heart as the two southerners laughed. They thought I was talking about her messing with me. Haha. Not even close.
"More pie, Justin?" her Gran asked. Drew gave me a look. I had to do it. Just to bug her. Just to bug those beautiful eyes into frustration "Yes, please. Thank you very much".
Hoped you enjoyed! I had to laugh when I wrote "You can't class this as a road". Idk why xD
