Imagine the worst thing that has ever happened to you in the last year. Hard?
I doubt it.
Now imagine the best thing that has happened to you in the last year. Easier?
Probably not
We have a predisposition for remembering the bad stuff, and it has always bothered me. Why we seem to be focusing on the negativity.
But when I really think about it - it's not that strange at all.
Because the good things are the ones which we look back on and think: we did right.
They are not as memorable, because they float along the lines of our expectations of the world.
So when something bad happens, it hinders the way we think. It forces us to evaluate why. To question our choices and wonder "how did this happen?"
Because we seem to always believe we are supposed to be a certain way. We don't want to take adversity and obstacles into account.
But really, you need to give up. To stop trying to justify the bad stuff as something that needs to be avoided. To give up those thoughts that say there is no possible way forward.
Good times are experienced when our brain releases dopamine and other chemicals. Bad times are experiences when there's a lack of those.
So if we can be thankful and grateful for the bad times, as they will teach us to become even better, they will be masked as good ones, ultimately fooling ourselves.
It's worth a shot.
