Chapter 2
Paige's Plan
I lay in bed that night thinking of reasons why Leon might like me. I wasn't even that pretty: I had long, curly, brunette hair, startling green eyes and pale skin. Nothing special really, just plain and normal-looking. I wasn't that clever either, I was quite good at English and geography, though I didn't stand out to be really clever. Popular? Not at all, people usually ignored me, except him and my friends. At midnight, I drifted off to sleep and slept right through until 7:00am.
"Scarlett, you need to ge-" my mum began.
"I know! I need to get up!" I cut her off.
Suprisingly, I didn't feel tired this morning so I jumped out of bed and picked some clothes out of my wardrobe. I picked out some blue jeans, a purple top and a white cardigan, simple. I childishly skipped downstairs and sat on a stool.
"Morning mum," I said.
"Morning sweetie," my mum replied.
"I'm going to Lily's tonight," I told her.
"Oh, ok,"
I hastily ate my breakfast and drank some orange juice, I wanted to get to school so I could talk to Lily. After brushing my teeth, finding my school bag and saying bye to my mum, I set off for school. I tightened my scarf as I stepped outside, it was so cold today, the strong wind made my eyes water. Luckily, I saw Lily a few metres in front of me as I walked to school.
"Lily! Lily!" I shouted.
She turned round and smiled at me, then waited as I hurried forwards to catch up with her. As soon as I reached her, I started to fire questions at her.
"What did you want to show me? Is it something bad? Who is it about? Wha-" she cut me off.
"Chill Scarlett! I'll show you later!" she laughed.
"Ok..." I sighed.
Just as I walked through the school gates, I saw Leon kicking around a football. I tried to run before he saw me, but I wasn't quick enough unfortunately.
"Hey Scarlett, you look beautiful!" Leon laughed, his eyes sparkling.
"Shut up!" I shouted, though I couldn't believe myself, I was smiling at his comment.
Leon seemed to notice my smile to, he looked very excited, although he didn't say anything. I felt angry at myself for enjoying his comment, but then again, who wouldn't smile if they were called beautiful! Lily raised her eyebrows at my smile.
"What's with the smile?" she asked, laughing.
"Just thought of something funny..." I muttered.
Lily said nothing more, but I could tell by her expression she knew exactly was going on in my head. I tried changing the subject.
"Where are Paige and Amber?"
"Not sure," Lily replied.
We carried on walking to the corner of the field, both thinking. I hummed a tune quietly, trying to break the tension.
The rest of the day also passed smoothly, although I couldn't stop thinking about what Lily wanted to show me. During our last lesson (art) I was staring at the table, trying to guess, not paying any attention to the lesson.
"What is the answer Scarlett?" my teacher asked me, she knew I wasn't listening. I hate it when teachers do that.
"I-I....err...well I don't know Miss Ward..." I said quietly, embarrassed.
"She told me that she thought the piece of art work was mysterious and different, that made it intriguing. She wanted to know more about it, so she looked closely at the picture and soon got the main idea," Leon called out.
Miss Ward looked astounded.
"Wow, that is quite an explanation! Well done Scarlett! Although next time make sure you are listening through the whole class," Miss Ward said, smiling.
"Yes miss," I replied, shocked.
Leon had lied, I had never told him any of that, I didn't speak to him. He had just done that so I wouldn't be embarrassed and to help me, I felt kind of guilty. I turned round and smiled at him gratefully, he smiled back and winked. Lily covered her mouth with her hand, to stop her from laughing at us. I scowled but then smiled. That had been a very clever explanation actually, but then Leon was good at everything...and he was kinda good looking. Wait! What was I saying? I shook my head, hoping I would forget what I just thought.
Ok, so maybe the day hadn't passed that smoothly, but it wasn't a huge disaster.
"Thanks for...today," I thanked Leon.
He smiled, satisfied at his work.
"Anytime...beautiful..." he laughed.
I blushed at his comment and quickly walked away, with Lily at my side.
"Scarlett, your cheeks are scarlett!" she giggled.
I laughed and on our way to Lily's house we discussed my lucky escape in art.
"After you..." Lily murmured, holding her front door open for me.
"Thanks."
I ran upstairs and sat on Lily's bed, she new what I was waiting for.
"Come here," Lily gestured to her computer.
I sat upon the stool and waited for Lily to explain what she was going to show me.
"Well...I kinda went on Paige's email account because I kinda know her password and I kinda looked at her emails because she kinda hid them from me, so I kinda think she is hiding something!" Lily whispered.
"I 'kinda' want to see!" I exclaimed.
Lily showed me two emails, the first one said:
Paige,
I need your help please! I want you to make Scarlett like me. I'm trying to think of a plan, but I can't. Email me.
Leon
I was shocked and looked to see if Paige had replied, she had.
Leon,
Ok, I have a plan. Tomorrow in class help her in some way, get her out of trouble, help her with something like work! I will tell her good stuff about you.
Paige x
I stared in shock at the emails then narrowed my eyes. Paige. Was. Unbelievable. She helped him and not me, she set me up!
"Unbelievable!" I moaned.
Lily frowned and shrugged. She didn't really like to say anything in situations like this. I had to.
