It can take but the creak of a stair;
The light pad of a footstep;
The clearing of a throat;
The opening of a draw.
It can take but the mumble in your sleep;
An outsider's soft voice;
Static of my phone;
A train's distant roar.
It can take but one silly little thing;
The sound of someone sighing;
A breathing pattern changing;
The rustle of a page.
To wake me up.
And once I am awake, awakeness traps me like a merciless cage.
What can I say? I'm a light sleeper!
